Grinding sound while x-axis is moving extruder

Hey all,
I am still working on calibration issues and I'm stumped. There is a terrible grinding sound when callibration happens when the x-axis is moving the extrudter near the bearings... it basically fails the test and messses with the z axis as well. See video below. What's odd is that this never happens if you move it freely (the x axis).

Any help would be appreciated. I'd like it if my Prusa didn't have a death rattle on first try...
Thanks,
Tom

Re: Grinding sound while x-axis is moving extruder

1st: disable steppers (through the menue) and move the extruder carriage (in x-direction) and the printbed (in y-direction) manually.
do you feel any blocking ???

2nd: check the pulleyes at both steppers (x-motor, y-motor). it sounds as if either the belt or the pulleye slips.

3rd: check the belts tension.

4th: what happens if you move the axis through the settings menue ? do you hear the grinding sound as well ?

5th: check the y-endstop switch !

6th: install firmware 3.0.10 and invoke the pulleye test (think it's part of the selftest).

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...

From your instructions (comments in line):

1st: disable steppers (through the menue) and move the extruder carriage (in x-direction) and the printbed (in y-direction) manually.
do you feel any blocking ???
* No problem here, no blocking

2nd: check the pulleyes at both steppers (x-motor, y-motor). it sounds as if either the belt or the pulleye slips.
*

3rd: check the belts tension.
* Belt pings as suggested in instructions

4th: what happens if you move the axis through the settings menue ? do you hear the grinding sound as well ?
* Moves about freely with no issue

5th: check the y-endstop switch !
* No problems here

6th: install firmware 3.0.10 and invoke the pulleye test (think it's part of the selftest).
* Here is where I'm getting good information from the firmware update. During the selftest I now get this error: Loose pulley motor.

I'll try inspecting everything again on the pulley motors but still not sure exactly what to do in order to fix this.
Thanks,
Tom

on my mk1 the X axis idler bearing collapsed and made a lot of noise.. maybe you could check that?

It almost looks like the motor itself chokes up, not slipping.

Re: Grinding sound while x-axis is moving extruder

you can swap the y an x steppers temporarily, they are both the same type of motor. so you can at least check that its the motor (and not a bad connector or a defective driver circuit).

Re: Grinding sound while x-axis is moving extruder

We are having the same problem in my company with our new Prusa3D MK2.
Calibration fails because of the Loose Pulley Motor X issue.
I have now started calibration of the XYZ axis, avoiding the selftest, and it has calibrated the 4 of 4 points without issues and now it is improving the bed calibration without any issues.

Could it be a firmware issue at this point?

Cheers,
e.

You can definitely succeed at calibrating and even printing if the pulley and/or belt are not "right", bet eventually it'll slip and ruin a print.

Making sure you can pass the self test is in your best interests.

I fixed it!

Turns out the X-Axis pulley system was too tight which threw basically everything off. I loosened it (by a lot) and now I'm 70% done with my first print.
Perhaps the instructions shouldn't say "you should head a ping sound" but just tight enough where there is no slack.

Re: Grinding sound while x-axis is moving extruder

What do you mean you lossened up the X axis pulley system?
What exactly did you loosen up? the belt?

I tried that but it made no difference.
