Glass print surface broken after 2 months
Hi All,
I have an i3 Plus and have been printing away for a couple of months happily, until I noticed a chunk of the glass surface had come off with my last print. I've been using PVA and ABS juice and getting pretty good adhesion, and normally I dont need to do much to get the print off the surface. I sometimes soak it in hot water or lever with a craft knife but there is never much force required.
So do I have a faulty glass plate or am I doing something wrong? Most of my prints are ABS with the print bed at 108C.

Hi steve.a look to the new MK2 Prusa I3 printer, no glass plate needed. I have never used ABS juice on my MK1 Prusa I3, pritstick worked for me. No glass breaks on the printers I used it in the past on a glass buildplate. I have swapped over here in the UK to a material known as Printbite. Glass build plates have been out of stock for many weeks at Prusa's shop/website. Maybe due to the new Mk2 Prusa I3 using PEI on the printbed. If you want a new glass get one cut at your local DIY store. errrrrrhh correction below.
At 108 deg C on your glass print plate bed you need what is known as borosilicate glass. Ordinary glass is prone to break above 100 deg C.
A print bed of 95 deg C is good for ABS providing an oven like environment. I have abandoned ABS and use Colorfabb Ngen. Almost as good without the shrinkage, printbed 85 deg C and print temp of 238 deg C

I think that this is just one of those things with toughened (tempered) glass and as Nigel says, you may have better luck with borosilicate glass.
One thing I learned with 3D printers is that you buy spares before you need them as that really does reduce the possibility of things going wrong 😉 .
In the meantime, is it possible to turn the glass over and print on the other side?
I know this won't help, but I have 2 pieces of glass from PR and never had a problem, despite them being dropped on occasion and generally abused.

The most dangerous thing I can see is to do some manipulation when the glass is still hot. Otherwize maybe the heatbed is not well plate, meaning the the glass have effort applied to it by the holding clips.
However in addition to the glass provided with the printer, I use just standard 2 mm glass bough on regular local hardware store, which is thinner but heat faster, and it costs so few that I do not really care about breaking it, but I didn't break any, printing lots of ABS at 105 °C.
I have then 2 additional glasses, one have a kapton sheet sticked permanently (I give it a try, with various success) and while using one, the other can be cleaned and prepared to be ready as soon as I want.

Yes I ended up turning the glass over and using the other side. I have a couple of spares in the post from the store.
I will have a look at the MK2 upgrade, although I'm just getting started with the MK1 so I'm reluctant to make significant changes at this point.

The Mk2 is well worth going for. Just built mine today. More complex than the Mk1, but the result is pretty stunning.
