Garbled LCD display

Garbled LCD display but the print from SD card continues to progress flawlessly.... 😕

I have seen this many times in the last few weeks, my Prusa i3 MK2 is printing from SD card, and intermittently, without any effect on the printing process, the LCD screen begins to show a garbled mess, containing all sorts of letters, numbers, lots of question marks and various hieroglyphics.

I did not mind that too much so far, but today it happened while I was in the process of loading a new roll of filament during a print, when the old roll had emptied. The screen showed garbled nonsense, and rotating the knob changed only one or two characters on the screen. I could not figure out which one I should choose, so I picked one at random. It appears I picked the "It did not load properly" or maybe the "colour not clear yet" option or something like it, because another lot of filament was extruded away from the printing object, the display returned to making sense, and then I was able to continue the print.

Any idea what is causing this?

Will it get worse?

Should I fix it or order certain replacement parts before it shuts down the printer?

Thanks for any advice, Mik

Re: Garbled LCD display

Can happen if the ribbon cables get interference. Can you post a photo of the cable setup going from the box to the LCD?

Re: Garbled LCD display

Has there been any solution to this? I am seeing this on boot and then I only get the actual English back if I do the hardware reset by holding the front knob down.

Looks like you have a ribbon cable that isn't seated properly. Check both riboon cables at the LCD and on the Rambo. One may have slipped out enough to look like its ok, but one of the pins isn't making contact inside the connector.

Re: Garbled LCD display

➡ bad cable attached to exp1. swap the cables to see if the garbled lcd remains. if not: check the assembly of the cable and the ribbon cable itself (might be damaged somewhere). maybe you've to replace one.

💡 and be aware that the cable length has it's influence too. so if the cable is >60cm you may get some problems.
but sometimes 1m or even more does still work.... if you use high quality connectors and ribbon cables and if they are proper assembled and cable management is without any sharp bends and away from other cables (like the ones from the stepper) whose signals may interfere with it.

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...
