Filament jammed during print - need some advice SOLVED!

I was starting a new print using the same filament as the previous one. About half way through the first layer the filament jammed so that the extruder was just skipping and nothing was being extruded. I tried clearing the nozzle with the .4mm wire and it seems clear. I unloaded the idler and dismantled the front of the extruder and measured how far the filament goes down. 71mm from the very top of the extruder assembly ... Which is the middle of the heat break (is that what that is called, with the fins?)

What might have happened and what's my best approach to fix this?

EDIT: I've pulled the extruder loose from the carriage and it ppears that the block is at the top of the heatbreak (now that I have learned what that is ...) Why a jam could occur there during print I have no idea but what are my options to clear it? The heat sink is pretty tight to the heatbreak I think as I was going to unscrew it but didn't want to force it.

And should I do this "hot" as it seems reading some other comments for similar problems?

SOLVED! Thanks to some other posts here I was able to solve the problem. After remove the extruder from the carriage I took the heat sink off. It was pretty tight but once it broke loose it unscrewed easily. The problem was a small piece of broken filament stuck at the bottom of the PTFE tube. Why it broke I don't know but it was just a little chunk that might have broken off in the extruder gear.

Now to reassemble and test ...

I think I'm having the same issue. When loading the filament, it start making "clicking" sound... i think it got stuck or something... 🙄 at the end, it said it's ready. But when start printing, nothing got extruded... 😥

You mentioned about other post that helped you resolving your issue, could you point me to that post?
TIA!

There are several here. The solutions are also varied. One that I can't find but wanted to mention didn't require taking the extruder apart. He laid the printer on it's side, removed only the nozzle (be very careful of the thermistor wires!), heated a paperclip in a lighter and quickly inserted it into the stuck filament, let it cool, then was able to pull the filament out.

One thing about that I just thought of. Be sure the filament that is loaded is NOT being gripped by the extruder gear! Otherwise you'll be pulled one end but the other is held by the extruder ...

Here are the articles I found:
