Extruding goes good then slows down then picks up again

Hi there,
Everything has been going great. I just finished a 55 hour print. All is good... until... i switched filament to print something else.
Now the filament starts to go great.. then it slows down then picks back up again and i am getting gaps in my prints...
I tried to clean out the nozzle. I even have some more on order.
Not sure what is going on here. It extrudes nice and it isn't clicking or anything with the filament motor. It just goes great.. then slows.. then goes back to normal.

Very frustrating.
Any ideas?

Hi Scott

When you say you tried cleaning the nozzle, did you try the "Atomic Method"? That will show you where the problem is, assuming it is an extruder issue.

Atomic method (from point 3 onwards) here: https://ultimaker.com/en/manuals/149-atomic-method

Hi Peter!
Yes i tried that. I will try again though... I thought that would effect the whole extrusion of the filament meaning you wouldn't even get a partial extrude.
Thanks!

I am thinking that the PTFE tubing may have deteriorated after such a long print. If you get any sign of any black particles with that cleaning methos, it may be time to replace the tube.

Another possibility is is the filament is not as dry as it should be. Excess moisture in the filament boils and you get a gap in the print where the steam formed.

Peter,
I took the extruder assembly apart. Cleaned out the heating element then cleaned the nozzle. It was packed with filament. Added some heat with a torch and all is good.
Now it is back assembled and lets try this again!
I did the atomic pull and it kept snapping so that is why i took it apart.

Wow what a long day lol

With the Atomic clean, keep raising the "pulling" temp by 5 degrees every time the filament breaks when pulling out.

It really is a good way to "see" inside the extruder.

Ah ok.. could have saved me some time but taking it apart was worth the learning.

Thanks again Peter for all your help!
