extruder stops extrfuding midprint

my hot end /extruder quits mid print, but the printer keeps going. i think the extruder isn't melting the filament. how tight are the two screws holding the bearing for the filament supposed to be? this is the filament after unloading. i have to pull it out because part of it gets stuck in the pulley. here are some images.

Hi, are you sure your nozzle isn't clogged? What speeds are you printing at? Does your hotend cooling fan work?

Re: extruder stops extrfuding midprint

I am having a similar issue. I have found a few other posts about this issue and have done the following already:

I raised up my Z axis and removed the screws to gain access to the filament. Then heated the nozzle to 200c and pushed the filament through to make sure it wasn't clogged.

Backed out the Filament and cut off the end and put the filament back in.

I have tried to tighten down the screws to keep the filament in place.

Both the fans are running, I have verified this.

I can print a cube without issue, and it prints great. But every time I try to print the 3dhubs Marvin it stops right above his eyes always in the same place and stops extruding PLA and ends up printing in mid air. The print up till that spot is great, just always stops in the same place.

Does the software have anything to do with this. I have been using the simplify3d and was thinking of going back to Sli3er and try that instead and see if I get a different result. I just got my printer like a week and half ago and been trying harder and harder prints to make sure everything is setup right. This was my attempt of a print with supports.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Hi Gerardo,

The screws pushing the bearing should not be tightened too strongly, can you try to loosen it a bit ?

I'm like Jon Snow, I know nothing.

Re: extruder stops extruding midprint

Dear Mr.Prusa,
I just purchased your MK2 printer and assembled it. I was able to print several full figures (e.g. Prusa logo, Adalinda, Triceratops, Batman, Frog).

I am now having the same problem as the above user. When I tried printing the Gearbox, it stopped printing when the Gearbox was about 70% complete with the extruder stopped over the object. The heating of the extruder and bed also stopped.
I tried printing a castle and it just stopped when the castle was 2 cm above the bed with no further printing.
I restarted the printer and unloaded and loaded the filament to ensure the nozzle was clean. I then successfully printed a Marvin.

On the second attempt at the Gearbox, it printed about 40% and then the extruder continued moving (as if it were printing) about 1 cm above the object all the way to the end without extruding any more filament.

I have confirmed that the nozzle is not clogged, and both fans are working. I repeated the XYZ calibration without any errors.
I'm not sure what "screws pushing the bearing" are being referred to by Christophe

When that happens, if you look at the extruder pulley (the one that looks like this: ), what do you see? Is it spinning and not able to push the filament? Not spinning at all? Anything else weird?

Also make sure all the teeth are good on the extruder gear. Which filament and from what vendor? What are your print settings, which slicer.

try different filament.
try printing something that you slice yourself.
try different sd card

Re: extruder stops extrfuding midprint

The printer is brand new as is the filament from Prusa. The teeth are good on the extruder gear. Not sure if the extruder gear was spinning on each of those occasions as I did not think to check.
The printer settings were at default as I did not change anything. I'm a not-so-adventurous noob trying to get my feet wet.
I did not slice any of these figures. I just printed them off the SD card that they came on.
I'm printing the Tree Frog once more and it seems to be going well. I'm guessing that the problem may be with the gcode file. I may have to download a fresh copy of the gcode file from Prusa's website.
Thank you for your numerous suggestions.

Re: extruder stops extrfuding midprint

I think I may have solved the problem. The two screws with springs on the extruder may have been too loose. I tightened them by a couple of turns and it seems to ensure that the filament is fed.
Thanks for all your help.
