Extruder making clicking sounds and not extruding continuously

Hello guys!
Here is what my extruder is doing:
VIDEO
And here is the result, the filament is missing in some places:

Any ideas why this is happening and how I can fix it?
Thanks!

Hi!

Extrusion problem, the extrusion pulley ( https://d17kynu4zpq5hy.cloudfront.net/igi/prusa3d/yLfAfPXrW4nrb3lq.huge ) cant push the filament down into the hotend/nozzle, and this causes it to "slip" on the filament, causing this noice.

Your nozzle could be clogged, causing a higher friction for the filament, or your nozzle is to close to the print surface, which might cause a high pressure inside the nozzle if it cant extrude like it should.

You just preheat and choose "load filament" does it extrude as it should then without the "skipping" noise?

I'm having the same issue. While in the middle of printing, it started making sound. I just go to click on the menu to "change the filament" to fix it... Not sure if this is the correct way of repairing it... 🙄

You may have some filament stuck in the hot end/ extruder body. If printing with PLA and you used ABS before it is not getting hot enough.
I had a similar problem with some flexi filament stuck in the extruder part. It would allow full use but after a while got worse and worse. I was able to remove the filament, undo the screws and get a torch and could see the filament. Luckily I was able to pull it out with some pliers (long nose) but you may need to strip the hot end.

Is the hotend actually getting hot or cooling down too quickly possibly because the software has fans coming on at max?

Another possibility is a damaged PTFE tube. You could try the ultimaker "Atomic Method" to clean the inside of the hot end; that may help.

If I get that sound while printing, sometimes it helps to raise the temperature 4-5 degrees as well.

Hello,
I am also getting this problem on my Prusa MK3 when I am printing...
It occurs mid-print and not usually at the start of the print. It starts clicking.
I have used the atomic method with PLA several times.
How would I know if the nozzle is too close to the bed and how do I fix it?
Are there any other possibilities?
thanks,

I was getting a similar problem on my printer. Occasional clicking noise when the gear teeth jumped on the filament, which happened a lot whilst printing and occasionally whilst loading/extruding in air. The problem was the gears were too close together, and loosening the screws that bring them together got rid of the clicking and any bad printing.

Your nozzle could be clogged

This happened to me recently. PET was left in the extruder, and interfered with subsequent PLA print. To avoid this I must always feed some loaded filament through the extruder just moments before trying to unload it, or there is a little ball on the end. I wish there was an option to have this done automatically at unload.

Re: Extruder making clicking sounds and not extruding continuously

Came across this thread looking for a solution to the exact problem. I decided to first try raising the Z setting because of all the suggestions, that seemed like the easiest. (My issue seemed to be only on the first layer) So far, so good.
