Extremely confused with x-axis moving in wrong direction

Hey

I just finished assembling my Prusa i3 mk2 kit, and tried to run the selftest. Hotend seems fine, but as soon as it tries to check the x-motor, it runs opposite and moves away from the endstop causing it to crash into the side and skip steps. Since the connector on the controller can only go in one way, this seems extremely strange.

I haven't really been able to find any posts about anyone having this issue recently and it seems extremely strange. On my own self-built, I'd just have swapped the stepper wires, but that doesn't seem to be the solution here.

Does anyone know what might be causing this issue?

I think your conclusion is pretty correct. I can't imagine other reason than connector manufacturing error.

Can you pull the motor wire connectors from the Rambo board and compare them? I'd expect all the colors to be in the same order on each motor. If you see something obviously in the wrong place, it might be possible to move the connectors with a needle-nose pliers or something similar.

Well that's kinda what's weird - the color coding even matches up and is "in pattern" with all the other motors. When I open pronterface, the z and y axis also move correctly. I'm 99.9% sure I built it correctly and it seems like resoldering the connector just shouldn't be necessary. Am i supposed to flash the firmware to the board myself or something? Maybe I've missed a configuration step somewhere?

Re: Extremely confused with x-axis moving in wrong direction

Put off both X and Y belts and then swap motor connectors of X and Y motors. They both should move in the same direction, so swapping will show if the problem is in motor or in software. I guess it still will be X motor moving in wrong direction.
There is no configuration step in building process regarding motor directions. You most likely haven't missed anything. It's probably motor manufacturing error, nobody's perfect. You still should be able to resolve it by swapping cables in connector. Or contact PR support via live chat and ask for replacement, but swapping cables is way faster and quite safe as long as you are handy enough.

Edit: to be 100% sure, you can reupload latest firmware to Rambo and bring the board to factory reset, but I don't think it will change anything.

Okay - regular jumper wires should be able to handle the current or? I don't have any other wire to splice with and they'll be too short otherwise

Eh - embarassing, but I guess that's what most troubleshooting is once you figure out what's wrong. Turns out I was too tired yesterday evening to check that it was actually running the wrong way and not that I just couldn't see the endstop.

So yeah, it seems it wasn't an issue other than me being tired. Good thing I checked before redoing the wiring!
