Dented surface

Within just a day after assembly I dented the surface.

It was during the heat up process of the bed and nozzle for a print process, I just remembered that I needed to cancel it and arrange the printer a little bit, I hit "stop print". The print head was in the middle of the print area then it just goes down doing motion similar to auto bed leveling probe procedure, cut the power, move the nozzle to the none print surface area, and finally I got a spot there.

I'm wondering what do I do with this, pretty sure that I'm unable to have perfectly flat surface anymore with a hole there, not to mention was it the ultem only or heatbed also got dented.

Re: Dented surface

You'd have to peel off the PEI sheet and attach a new one. That way you also know for sure if it damaged the actual bed surface or if it's in the PEI itself. Spare PEI sheets can be ordered from Prusa, ask Chat if it is listed as "Out of Stock".

I guess you could try filling in the hole with a bit of epoxy (make sure it can be removed if the hole is all the way down to the bed surface), gluestick or what not. But perfectly flat you won't get it anymore without a fresh PEI sheet. I personally would ignore it and sand the spot after the print finished.

The PEI sheet will get worse and worse over time. Eventually its so bad you have to swap it.

ahh.... I guess I got no choice anymore then, I'm going to ignore the dented surface. I also kind of curious if the surface can be swapped with buildtak surface instead of ultem?

Re: Dented surface

Buildtak is slightly thicker than the PEI sheets, so getting the nozzle <> PINDA <> bed distances just right could be crucial.. IRC it was 0,5-0,6mm. I think I read people are successfully using it on the MK2, but I can't give a proper source where i read it.

I have the Buildtak Sheets sitting on my desk, but i am not ready to tear off my PEI sheet just yet. My current PEI sheet is now 5 months old and has some scratches and dent, but I think it'll last a few more months (unless i screw up, which might happen at any time 😉 )

Re: Dented surface

heheh... though ultem are quite great in terms of having a very smooth bottom finish instead of buildtak, but ultem can be a bit of pricey compared to the generic buildtak.

I have few spares of generic "cloned" buildtak at my disposal but the size is just at 200 x 200mm.

Thickness, I guess I gotta say buildtak probably around 0.5mm while ultem around 0.3 at least. What's tedious about these things are the adhesive films to clean up upon replacement 🙄
