Can anyone tell me why this print failed using PETG

Any idea why this failed? Using Hatchbox PETG. Prusa Edition Slic3r settings with an addition of vertical wall thickness selected and detect thin walls selected. Live z was set at -550mm and man this thing was stuck to the PEI sheet! Everything was printg fine for over 3 hours and then during the night, catastrophe. Layer height was 1.0, temp was 240c and bed temp 90c. Any ideas? Otherwise really like PETG.

Its hard to tell, PETG sticks like crazy, so it could either be that you weren't actually extruding filament for a few layers before all that spaghetti mess and then it started again (mechanical problem of some sort), then the home routine at the end caught part of the model and drug it it, dislodging it from the bad layers.

Or one or both of your axes got screwed up while printing (less likely).

Not sure. The peices were fused together, so I don't know if it skipped. The print completed, but completely failed. I wonder if my z axis was too low. I went from -340mm for PLA to -550mm for the PETG. Could that be the problem. I did notice the nozzel is discored as if plastic liquified and caramelized on the nozzel. Not sure if it is blocked or not as I had to leave for work.

I cant tell from the photo's how it came off the bed. Where the pieces aligned ? If so, I would guess you had a jam, possibly on the spoolholder. If they where misaligned as in your pictures, then X and Y axis skipped. Probably your nozzle bumped in to the print. You might be overextruding?

Re: Can anyone tell me why this print failed using PETG

Looks to me like something caused one of the axis to skip during the print.

Could have been a part of the print that "curled" up a bit and caught the extruder. Could have been the print catching the cable bundle (behind the extruder) if it is not mounted high enough. Could be a loose belt that just slipped during the print due to some vibration induced by something in the print.

Long shot here but I had a similar thing happen and kept repeating itself every time I restarted the print until I caught the problem in action.
The cable bundle from the back of the extruder was hanging low and caught on the back of the print causing one or more of the axis' to skip some teeth and throw it off.

Re: Can anyone tell me why this print failed using PETG

I had the same problem with a PETG print, and it seems to have been caused by overextrusion.

On the layer that got offset there was a larger lump of plastic that was stuck to the edge of the original layer. So I think there had been a very slow buildup of plastic on the nozzle, that suddenly got stuck.

When I lowered the flow value a bit, that stopped happening.

Any chance you are printing in a Silent mode? If you do then try using the High power mode and see if the problem persists.
