Working toward ABS Benchy

Hi,

TLDR: Posted pictures of my current issues at the end of the post. See the ➡

Thanks for any help, i do appreciate the shared experience.
Every night, i am printing tests for hours trying to improve my quality 🙂

Rencently, i worked toward a great PLA benchy (thanks for people on this forum).

I still have a rough patch on the front bow. In the picture we don't see it very well, but without the camera effect, its pretty apparent.

I recently decided to move toward ABS, so i'm fairly new with it.

Started by building an enclosure:

It's big but it gets the job done. The door is staying in place with magnets, i got the power supply + RSP outside with a big fan that keeps them cold.
One the print is done, i can start a 80 mm fan and just get all of the toxic vapors outside (sorry mother nature).

Firsts ABS print was way worst than expected:

❗ Calibrated the extruder motor by adding gcode at the start of the print and changed my extrusion multiplier.

Printed a heat tower for my AMZ3D ABS (240-210 range according to the spool)

❓ I feel like all temperature layers are relatively similar. How do you guys differentiate them? Decided to try 227 for now. The overhang was curling up like crazy on all temperatures.

❗ Cleaning my bed with 70% alchool between every print
❗ Not using any glue/hair spray/abs juice
❗ Currently using a 7 layer brim

❗ Printed with different bed temperature and right now 82 is giving me rather low elephant foot. I'll try to slower the bed temperature again to see if the benchy's bow is smoother.

So he's there issues i'm trying to solve at the moment:

➡ Really bad looking line next to the start point. Thinking about adding a little more coast distance (currently at 0.5 mm) or playing with the current 1 mm retraction.

➡ Rough edge on the side of the boat. I had similar issue with the PLA but never managed to totally fix it. I'll try to lower the bed temperature again and maybe lower my extrusion width?

➡ Really rough looking bow. I have the exact same problem with PLA. I'm running out of idea on how to fix it. 😕

➡ Overhang is curling up. I managed to lower this issue by drastically lowering the print speed. My outline speed is at 9 mm/s. Thinking of adding cooling at about 10-20% capacity, but doesn't sound like a good idea for ABS.

Any tips is welcome.

After countless tests, i managed to get something really good.
For those with similar issues, here's the settings for AMZ3D orange ABS:

❗ With my enclosure, i can't print without a nuzzle fan blowing!

0.1 mm :

Nuzzle: 230 degree

Bed: L1 -> 91 degree
L3 -> 88 degree

Fan: L0 -> 0%
L3 -> 16%

Bridge fan: 40%

Speed: everything is at 32 mm/s

0.2 mm :

Fan: L0 -> 0%
L3 -> 10%

Rest is the same as 0.1 mm

dude thank you SO MUCH for your post!
I searched the net for so long to deal with my bad overhangs with ABS.

Your settings worked perfectly for me with Hobbyking ABS in an IKEA Lack enclosure!
