Where have I gone wrong?

I've had my printer a week or so and been reading a lot and learning. I have an issue with Slic3r where I don't have a preview or layers even though the 3D model shows my design. I drew a little die (for a candy machine) in Microstation and saved it as an STL file and added it via Slic3r. when I look at the 3d tab it's there but there is no preview or layers. needless to say it's no printing correctly and I'm sure it's user error in drawing the file but I'm not sure where/what I did wrong to cause it

Here is what I'm talking about. I can upload the STL file also if it helps

Preview Tab

Layers Tab

Thanks for any assistance. Anything I can google to figure out what I did wrong?

Do you really press the "Slice now"-Button ?

Oops, didn't even know about that. Other STL files automatically showed laters etc when I added so that was sorta confusing. Now I don't have my star on the layers so something else to figure out

It's probably something with the model. I am not Familiar with Microstation so I have no suggestion on that software but you might want to try to repair it with netfabb or import it into something like tinkercad and re-export it.

Without the file is hard to really know what is wrong with it.

Re: Where have I gone wrong?

Slices fine for me. Must be your slicer settings.

Re: Where have I gone wrong?

I've been playing around with this and it is really weird. There are 2 shells and if you separate them both shells slice correctly in Slic3r and Simplify3D.

Here is the Slic3r screen..

When sliced as provided I get the same issue in Slic3r as you but I get something completely different in Simplify3D. It is actually taking the the top piece and removing where it intersects with the bottom piece. This causes some serious bridging.

After running it through MakePrintable it now works correctly.

Re: Where have I gone wrong?

And of course, the issue referred to by Richard is not evident in the slicer I use (KISS).

It's been some time since I messed with KISS. I seem to have lost the link to the latest version. Would you mind indulging me and send me in the right direction?

Re: Where have I gone wrong?

Tried the original file as is and it has the same issue in slic3r but slices fine in S3d. Anyhow the fixed file works on both.

Richard, here's the current release: http://www.kisslicer.com/download.html

As you may be aware I am one of the Alpha-testers for 1.6; the new features (which I am not allowed to mention) are rather awesome! It will be a long while before the other slicers catch up with this one... And if you have ordered the MM upgrade, this is THE slicer to use - functionality is so much better than any other.

I think the last time I looked at this I had to get it from the forums and was in an extreme beta state. I have the MM upgrade ordered (15 minutes after it was posted for sale) so I will definitely be looking at Slic3r, S3D and KISS when it comes in.

I plan on spending time this weekend trying to get the settings down and comparing prints between the 3 slicers to see what works best for me. If I find KISS to be beneficial I will spend the $42 to go pro. Spent way too much on S3D for one feature(customizable supports) that Slic3r didn't have so $42 for KISS isn't a bad deal if it works.

Re: Where have I gone wrong?

@ Jamie Sorry about the HiJack!

Just wanted to tell Richard, that the 1.5 is now final so is available from my link.

There will be 3 levels for 1.6, with Enterprise costing almost as much as S3D, but with some humongous features. The Pro version is really not required, but it does support Jonathan.

The only problem with KISS and MM is that there is no "official" post processor currently available - just the one "wot I rote".
