What to Troubleshoot. Hardware or Slicer?

One side of the model is not smooth. Is it most likely an error in the slicing (Slice3r) or hardware Y aksis? Anyone with experience with this kind of problem?

Dang, nice looking benchy otherwise. Is the rough side the one facing away from the part cooling fan?

What material is this, PLA? What slicer settings did you use?

My guess right now would be curling. Caused by for example: insufficient cooling, too high print temp/bed temp, maybe even printing slower etc. Sometimes goes away when you up the layer height. And some PLAs suffer more than others from this problem.

Material PLA, and sliced with PRUSA PLA 1.75 profile. No parameters changed. (extruder temp: 215 first/205 others ) (Bed temp 55) 0.10mm DETAIL. Silcer version 1.31.6-prusa3d.

And yes it is the side facing away from cooling fan. I sense it must be the slic3r then, and not hardware, or do I miss misinterpreted something?

I would say the slicer. Could you rotate the object by 90 degrees on the bed?

Point the ship away from blower. Nice thinking. But if I encounter the problem with another object, it might not be possible to rotate out of the problem. For now i will rotate it, and then time will tell...

Re: What to Troubleshoot. Hardware or Slicer?

You could also try a few other things if it is not possible to rotate the printed object.

- slow down the print

- Try a different filament. I try to print a benchy for each filament I have even if it is from the same vendor but just a different color. Each filament has different properties due which I can see mostly on how much it strings.

-Play around with printing temp, try going lower

- Adjust the retract and acceleration values in the slicer

There are other things that can be done, but these are just of the top of my head.
