Trouble printing M10 Bolt thread

Firstly apologies if this has been answered no another thread but here goes:

I'm trying to print an M10 bolt off Thingiverse. The bolt head prints fine and I have no issues with my PLA sticking to the bed. I have printed items at the same height with no issues. The issue arises when it starts to print the thread and from watching it looks like the nozzle becomes clogged. If I stop the print then print a 25mm calibration cube it clears the crap out and gets on with it. If I go to print another M10 bolt the hex head is fine but then I have the same problem over again. The current bolt I am trying to print is the 2nd one I have found off Thingyiverse. The first attempt on this 2nd bolt actually worked albeit the thread looked to have notches in it. I Went to print another straight after and ended up with a Christmas tree. Can anyone help me to understand why it clogs up on the threads. For reference I have no problem printing an M10 nut. Thanks in advance.

Re: Trouble printing M10 Bolt thread

It is hard to tell from your description, but if you are printing very small items, the plastic on the prior layer has less time to cool down than when you are printing a larger object. The result is you are depositing melted plastic on top of melted plastic, which can get gooey (technical term) and clog the tip of the nozzle.

Assuming you are using Slic3r, you can look at Filament Settings -> Cooling and you will see "Slow Down if layer print time is below:"
You could lower that speed setting.

Or better yet. Print multiple bolts. As the printer moves from one to the other, there is more time for the current one to cool down.

Does that help?

Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage or loss. If you solve your problem, please post the solution…

Nice one Aaron. In short changing the the setting you suggested from 15 to 10 made all the difference. Here is a list of at least some of my settings for anyone else trying to print an M10 bolt in PLA:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2425295
First layer: 0.2
Other layers: 0.16 (as recommended by Thingiverse uploader
First layer bed temp: 55
First layer nozzle temp: 210
Other layer bed temp: 55
Other layer nozzle temp: 210
Extrusion multiplier:1
Vertical shells: 2
Infill: 40%
Extrusion widths: all 0.5 except top 0.35
