Thoughts on getting a cleaner print?

Hello all.

I finished building my kit this week, and have been spending a lot of time calibrating, using the calibration "sheets" that I found in another thread. Those were a great help.

I just finished up a couple of prints. I'm quite pleased for the most part, but there are a few areas that are rough. I'm not entirely sure where to start tinkering to improve them. I'll include a couple of pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.

So mainly it is the rough spots on the top of the eyes and top of the legs on the treefrog, and the sides of the dimmer.

The treefrog was printed off the SD card, and the dimmer was at standard .15 settings in Slic3r. Both with Prusa silver PLA (obviously).

Does anyone have any suggestions to continue fine tuning? I'm a complete newbie. I've done a lot of printing, but never had much control over the printer or the slicer before.

Thanks!

Lowering the print temperature a bit could help. I usually print PLA at 200°C. You can do that for the models on the SD card by going into the tuning option during print and adjust the temp there.

As for the slicing, are you using the standard Slic3r or the Prusa version? Like you I had underwhelming results with Slic3r at first because I had no idea which settings I had to adjust, but then I discovered the Prusa version and got good results with the standard presets.

Looking at the dimmer I would suggest setting the seam to "random", print without brim if you used one, lower the temp to 200°C, and maybe set top and bottom infill to "concentric" or "archimedian chords" (that's purely aesthetic).

Wonderful!

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will try them all!

I'm using the Prusa version of Slic3r, but you really helped me a ton by letting me know you can change the temp settings on the printer itself. I've been playing with temp since yesterday and have been re-slicing every single time. This will save me a lot of hassle!

this could help but those on the second item are always going to exist since the layers have to start and stop somewhere. But they can get mitigated.

I know the link is for S3d but most of the suggestions still apply to Slic3r
