Software: Slic3r Simplify3D KISSlicer Cura - Which one?

Hello to all,

I'm new to 3d printing. I'm waiting for my first printer (MK2), but meanwhile I'm looking o the software supported by the printer.
Which do you use, suggest and why?

I've search a little bit but have no idea pros-contros on those software.

Many thanks!

Simon

I think you are better off starting with Slic3r, simply because it is the slicers used by Prusa Research and supplied with the driver package.

Later on, if you feel the need, you can have a more educated look at other products.

Thanks Peter for the answer.
What about the post written by Josef?

http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/print-tips-slic3r-settings-kisslicer-model-repair--f12/simplify3d-settings-t337.html#_ga=1.109591109.1930044853.1477476699

He is putting the settings to configure Simplify3D.
Then, as written, I've never used those softwares. As far I've understood, after creating a project I need to save it to SD card and put it into the printer. I'll learn it, but for that I'm off topic.

Actually I would like to know which software is the best 🙂

Thanks.

Simon

I think there is no such thing as "the best slicer".

Absolutely. I prefer KISSlicer and depending on model occasionally resort to Cura. Some are advocates of S3D and from what I understand the latest version of PS Slic3r should also be pretty good. Then there's Craftware and a variety of others which I have not tried.

I think I need to do some experience myself 🙂

A simple/stupid question. It's possible to handle a project on different computers and different softwares?
As far I've understood, when the project is finished, the export in G-code is what the printer will then print. Is that correct?

Thanks all.

that is what I do...
others use a computer with a serial connection (USB) to deliver the Gcode rather than transporting it on an SD Card. or something like a RaspberryPi...

Simplyfy3D is a great purchase. It can be run on two computers, two PC's or a Mac and a PC. Or two Macs. It is my slicer of choice and covers my six different 3D printers. I get great 3D prints with it across all my printers. I have tried all the others, Slicer, Cura and Kisslicer. Simplyfy3D is the best.
In my opinion, I have the prints to prove it on my Prusa MK2

Simplify3d

I could go into the details about their process concept which is extremely powerful and the many other refined details in Simplify3d that show this is a commercial product aimed at users who want to print and not write bug reports or search for workarounds all the time. I could rant about Slic3r and Cura not even being able to label the goddamn axes in the viewport. Cura is officially not showing a legend for their slicing preview so you have to guess what the line colors mean (just lol, they even posted this officially in their forum). Slic3r likes to crash.

If you have time to waste try all free / open source slicers.

Or just drop the 150,- USD if all you want is to print. Prusa should have bundled Simplify3d with their MK2.

Re: Software: Slic3r Simplify3D KISSlicer Cura - Which one?

Slic3r is good to get started and learn the basics imo. My only gripe is its stability and slicing performance when processing large or complex objects.

When you want to step up, Simplify3D is indeed a more powerful slicing solution (i.e. when printing multiple of the same object, S3D will save some time by determining an optimal order to follow which minimizes time spent traveling between objects.). I found 150 USD a bit much for a program, but I cannot argue with the slicing speeds and print results I'm now getting. Tweaking your settings to just about right is a matter of applying trial & error though.

Like Merv, I use it on my two computers (MBP and gamingdesktop). Wish they'd allow me to do a third installation without needing to pay up, so I could install it on my Linux workdesktop too 😀

IIRC they have a two week refund period, so I'd say: experiment around in Slic3r for now, when you want to try something else, give S3D a try.

Re: Software: Slic3r Simplify3D KISSlicer Cura - Which one?

I am still a noob on 3D printing and I am still learning from using different slicers. Long story short, Slic3r gives you great print out of the box with the PR's settings, easy to setup, but the auto generated support on your 3D printing model is not great and cannot be customized. Also, it does not give you a total print time and filament usage on that print. On the other hand, Simplify3D gives you plenty of options to customize your support structure, for example you can add, delete and place wherever you want. Also, it gives you the total print time and filament usage on that print. Plus, you can send it to print via USB. However, you need to modify the xml files in order to make some preset profiles on your particular filament and it is not an easy task comapre to Slic3r. That's my 2 cents.

Peter can you share your config file for KISSlicer, I tied it but I see that it is missing Prusa i3 Mk2 in the list... so if would be helpful if I could use your settings which you have tested and calibrated...

Thanks!
