Slic3r adding unnecessary supports

Anyone have any idea how to get Slic3r to stop this behavior with supports? It is adding these two towers of supports that do nothing.

There should only be supports in the two holes on the part.

Re: Slic3r adding unnecessary supports

If you tell Slic3r to only support from the build plate, it will build towers so the supports are only from the build plate.

If you want Slic3r to support inside the holes, you need to UNSELECT the support from build plate only.

It is un-selected.

I had the same problem. Just play with "Pattern Spacing" (for example 3 mm instead of 2 mm). This fixed it for me.

Thanks for the idea. The higher numerically I go I get more supports on the outside. If I go down to 1mm I get fewer but they are also gone from the holes! The area that actually legitimately needs the supports.

Update: If I go down to .05mm on pattern spacing I get supports in the holes and a minimal of supports on the outside where there should not be any. So that is doable maybe.

Yes... I know, it's very individual from object to object and no "ideal" solution. More "try and error". But if you found the right number it should work with no supports outside. But maybe someone else have a "more professional" solution?

Bump

This is kinda silly, I have trouble getting the supports I want as well. In other packages, something like "support horizontal inflation" would be the setting I'm looking for.

I maintain an informal list of San Diego, CA 3D printing enthusiasts. PM me for details. If you include a contact email and I can add you to the informal mailing list.

Re: Slic3r adding unnecessary supports

I don’t know if it’s really helpful, but for making supports (and only for the supports, rest still with slic3r) I switched to Meshmixer http://www.meshmixer.com .

It’s free, quite easy (thanks to some youtube tutorials like this: ) and so much more powerful for making supports! You even save a lot of material. So I just can say: give it a try.
