Shifted X layer
Hello all,
yesterday I tried to print a christmas star twice using my Original Prusa i3 mk2 (using
PETG filament). First time it works perfectly. The second time it started good the first layers but afterwards a layer has been shifted in direction of the X axis.
Could the reason be that the X device got stuck with the filament lump visible in the picture ? If yes how could such lumps be prevented? Could my Slic3r settings be improved ?

Reduce extruded amount - set "Flow Tweak" (or similar) to 95%; use Z-Lift and High Power mode.

I have been trying to master PETG filament printing. The biggest factor for me was slowing down the print. This is critical for layers 1 to 5, then incrementally bump up the speed. If you increase the speed and start seeing blobs, back down the speed.

@Peter: How does High Power mode change things? Does is smooth the blobs produced by PETG since the steppers have more power?

Hi - I changed to high power mode and restartet the print. Unfortunately I got another filament lump and had to cancel the print again.
@David: OK, I will try to fiddle around adjusting speed settings...

I adjust the speed using the LCD knob. I also take off the enclosure of my setup so when the PetG lays down, it sticks to the previous layer. Who makes the PetG filament you are using? I am using eSun and I got better results when dropping the nozzle temp which helps prevent the blobs.
I found increasing the layer height help with the blobs. I print at .20mm but anything smaller the blobs come back.

I bought REAL PETG filament from reprapworld.com.
I also tried out to reduce my nozzle temperatur from 245° (first layer) / 245° (further layers) to 240° / 230 °. Using that temperatures I was able to finish my print. We will see if the problem reoccurs for further prints...

I am currently printing with 0.2mm layer height. Probably will give 0.4mm a try to save time for some prints in the future 🙂

I've come across another trick for PetG. If the 1st layer is not sticking in one area I stop the print, put down some blue tape in the problem area, and restart the print. I take a nail file and rough up the tape and this lets the PETG grab it.

I am using a glue stick on the bed and had no problems so far. It also depends on the Z adjustment, if the first layer sticks well, but you cannot get too close to the bed to prevent the nozzle to smear over the first layer...

Thanks for the glue tip with PETG. I just tried it and it is far superior than what I had been doing.
