PLA don't stick after using glue stick once

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with PLA adhesion on PEI, after using a glue stick for printing carbon filament CF-XT20.

I cleaned the PEI surface after the glue stick mess up and I did this very well, with water, window cleaner and IPA (70%) for several iterations, but with limited success. PLA don't want to stick, like it did before. Blue tape seems to have a similar effect to the PEI.

A resurfacing with a kitchen sponge does help a little bit. A new live Z calibration has nearly no impact, the PLA keeps its low adhesion. It sticks, but the initial strong adhesion from the first days seems to be gone.

So, as you can imagine, I don't want to scrub the whole PEI down while playing with different filaments. Does anyone have the same problem, an explanation or some ideas how to avoid the adhesion decrease?

I'm thankful for any advice.

Regards,
Tobi

🙂

I have 0 adhesion problems since I use IPA 99.5% and paper towels or coffee filters (to be used only once) before each print.

Some difficult prints may still require glue, which is is easy to clean with window cleaner and a cloth. But after that you need to use IPA.

Did you change the nozzle for the carbon filament? maybe you need to re adjust the live z.

Try cleaning the bed with acetone. It will help revive the PEI surface.

yes, acetone is the only thing that works.
i messed around a few times with glue stick but refused to do so anymore.

actually i use two things to clean my print bed after each print:
- frist i wipe the surface of with acetone containing nail polish remover
- then i use a grain alcohol soaked paper towel to remove any remaining nail polish chemicals

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...

Hi everyone,

thank you very much for the acetone advice. It worked really fine, even if I never thought that acetone may help after all my srcubbing with alcohol 😉 .

Everything runs much better now!

By the way: yes, I've changed the nozzle (to hardened steel) and did several live Z adjustments to find the sweet spots for XT-CF20 and PLA. So, the steel nozzle does also print PLA, but maybe some of the adhesion problems are based on the steel nozzle in combination with the glue stick leavings. I don't want to exclude that. Anyway, I' happy again!

Best Regards
Tobi

I have the same problem.
After using the glue stick once no amount of cleaning with water or 99,9 ipa will get the PLA to stick again for the next 10 print trys.

Will try the acetone method.

Had the same issue, but I thought it was something I was doing wrong. 🙂

Fixed it with elbow grease: a couple very very vigorous cleaning with IPA and a dish towel (for extra rubbiing power) made PLA stick again. (10 minutes of "sanding" with coth towel + another couple wipes with paper towels)

I'll use acetone in the future 🙂
