PE Slic3r: Support settings, why is the default at 43?

Hello,

For support generation, why is the Overhang threshold set at 43 in PE Slic3r when the Mk2 can do much better?

I ran this test:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2298057

I was able to get to 75 degrees, so I should make this the new default in Slic3r as to not generate extra support material?

Update: The value for threshold appears to be 100 - the threshold value, so I should be able to use a value of 30-35 with a large safety margin, correct?

Update2: I noticed at 70 degrees the bottom layers did not bond correctly even the top layers did.

I think the overhang threshold is the point where about half the width of the next line will be supported by the line below.

It depends on a lot of factors -- shape, desired quality, cooling, filament, speed, and even bed plate orientation (depending on the layer cooling fan direction).

So there's no one setting, and even if there were, it would be the culmination of a lot of other variables beyond the scope of its tab location. I don't expect the software at this time to be able to figure it all out.

I had a round arch (not just round vertically, but also round in the XY plane as well) that I recently had to fully support to get it to print correctly. It wasn't there to "support" the overhang, but more to tack the layers down to something to prevent them from curling upwards.

Also if you print a long steady overhang, the first couple of layers are all right, but then the errors accumulate and the shape will deteriorate. So the overhang test does not cover all scenarios.

And there is a settings in Slic3r - "Bridging perimeters", which instructs Slic3r to print overhangs with an overlap of extrusions lower than half the extrusion width with bridging flow, meaning these not ideally supported extrusions are extruded as thick threads instead of squished flat rectangles.
