Noob question scaling in slic3r

Hi,
I got my MK2 last week and have been having great fun printing things from thingyverse and the SD card. When printing a fidget straight from thingyverse it was tiny, I mean 8mm OD. I just scaled it up a couple of hundred percent and it was fine. Now I am trying to print things I have designed myself and I am having the same issue. (I am lucky in that I have access to solid edge and inventor at work)
Whilst just messing about the actual size of prints doesn't matter but now I'm trying to make useful bits I need to be able to translate my designs faithfully to g code. Is there a standard unit in slic3r so I can use a reliable scaling factor or am I doing something stupid?
Thanks

Oh and MK2 has to be the coolest toy I own.

Slicers usually expect milimetres. If you use inches. There will be a scaling issue.

Not an inch to mm issue as both my CAD packages default to metric. Strangely I have resent the files to home and they now appear to be fine in slic3r. Thanks for the help it did make me go and check.

Best wishes,
sometimes I get errors in Simplify3D if there are parts in a model that are not joined to other elements.
