Mystery gap layer
Hej folks,
While trying to create a filament guide I made a relatively simple object in 123D Design, as shown here:
Started the print using purple PLA and after 2+ hours of printing it ran into problems due to some warping and weird stuff going on. Stopped the print and gave it a more detailed look in the Slic3r preview, noticed that somehow there's a gap about halfway the model where there is simply no layer (while imho there should definitely be one):
Can anyone tell me if this is something due to weird settings etc, or something I screwed up? 🙂
For the record: supports were enabled in the slic3r settings, which are disabled on this inspection screenshot, but the gap remains.
I've attached the STL file for those of you who want to tinker with it - zipped because apparently STL files are taboo here 🙂
Re: Mystery gap layer
I just sliced your model in KISS; there is no missing layer in that, so it is either Slic3r or the settings.

Re: Mystery gap layer
Hi Peter,
Thanks for helping out!
I downloaded KISS myself and tried it with KISS settings from the forum (KISSlicer Settings PJR.zip) with style Fine, support 3 (Raft Basic) and printer Prusa i3 Mk2, left the rest to default.
However, after printing the raft it crafted a very shoddy object as can be seen in the image here: https://goo.gl/photos/R1Hf12Rc8HykKjqs5
Printing is done with 1.75mm PLA.
Also the object starts to warp up and gets loose from the support layer which can be seen at the lower left corner of the image - I also ran into this problem with the Slic3r gcode, which is why I stopped the Slic3r print the first time. (I detected the mystery gap later)
I stopped the print, I'm now looking for suggestions to improve 🙂
Is it a problem that the bottom of the object is rounded? I'd hope that this would normally be handled by supports.
Note that I'm quite new to 3D printing, so any generic pointers for these situations are welcome 🙂
Thanks!
Re: Mystery gap layer
Try with a brim and not a raft. Also use the 0.2mm later height.

Re: Mystery gap layer
Slic3r has issues with the model. It reports "Auto repaired (107 errors)". Likely the tiny owl cut out is too detailed to be digested by Slic3r, or maybe Slic3r is right and the model is not quite consistent. This is something I shall look into.
