PREPARING THE PRINT SURFACE AND REMOVAL OF THE OBJECTS
💡 It is important to prepare the print surface while cold. Ideally spray some ABS Juice on the surface and wipe it with paper towel. If you use ABS Juice spray on the hot surface, you will quickly have ugly buildup of ABS which can leave marks on the printed objects.
💡 Remove the objects only when they cool down to room temperature. If they are still hot, the bond with print surface is too strong and you will have to use a lot of force to remove them. This can lead to loosing the calibration of the print surface or even damage on some parts.
💡 The simplest way to completely clean the print surface is submerging it in warm water for 30 minutes. You can then simply clean the surface with towel. Next steps are one coat of glue and then one coat of ABS Juice before every print. Visual guide to preparing the print surface.
ABS
Nozzle temperature: 255°C
Bed temperature: 100°C (Bigger object bigger temp.)
Surface preparation: One coat of glue on clear glass and light coat of ABS Juice before every print.
PET
Nozzle temperature: 240°C
Bed temperature: 80°C – 100°C (Bigger object bigger temp.)
Surface preparation: One coat of glue on clear glass and light coat of ABS Juice before every print.
PLA
Nozzle temperature: 210°C
Bed temperature: 50°C (Bigger object bigger temp.)
Surface preparation: Coat of glue before every print.
HIPS
Nozzle temperature: 220°C
Bed temperature: 100°C (Bigger object bigger temp.)
Surface preparation: One coat of glue on clear glass and light coat of ABS Juice before every print.
FLEX (POLYPROPYLENE)
Nozzle temperature: 230°C
Bed temperature: 50°C (Bigger object bigger temp.)
Surface preparation: Tape the print surface with regular packing tape (it is also made from Polypropylene).
Use the Flex setting from the latest drivers. It needs to be printed slowly.
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
I see that the new Prusa i3's are now being offered with improved 1.75mm filament performance. I bought my build kit last month and have not yet printed with 1.75mm, but would like to try. I am just wondering if there is any special tweaking that needs to be done to achieve the 'improved performance'?
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
You can read the "press release" on prusa printers http://prusaprinters.org/prusa-i3-is-now-1-75-mm/ and if you would like to upgrade at any point, all the parts will be available really soon in a small kit here http://shop.prusa3d.com/en/3d-printer-parts/71-prusa-i3-plus-285-mm-to-175-mm-upgrade-kit.html that includes the prepared hotend, printed parts, fasteners and printing fan 🙂
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
I tried everything recommended on my printer, it wouldn't stick for PLA until I tried grannies extra hold hair spray. Sticks well every time and only cost me 99 pence for a large can.
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
High Josh,
Well, don´t need to be grannys, my wife´s hair spray did the same for PLA printing .:) Then I used Build take surface. Sticks sometimes too much, after a while and printing Nylon, it did not stick any more, a little wipe with aceton - read my lips- a LITTLE wipe with aceton, brought it back to life.
Build tak is not as even as glass with kepton tape- so be aware by printing without raft.

Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
My glass as supplied seemed to have some form of coating applied already. (It looked messy and coated one side with something) I tried to print with it but no joy, no adhesion, I had to clean the residue off with acetone. I then printed after applying a coating of pritstick as I was printing with supplied PLA filament, that worked well. I will try the supplied glue and ABS juice when I change to ABS filament.

Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
I then looked to buy a new glass. Out of stock for many weeks, It seems that Prusa has a problem with glass or a new material!!!! ie the Mk2 printer. My stepper motors seemed bashed about a bit, the labels were scored. They seemed second hand.

Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
I have a question regarding nozzle fan for the first layer.
My experience is that ABS needs to cool slow and PLA needs to be cooled down as fast as possible after hitting the bed?
In both the slic3r settings and the S3D Settings for PLA the Nozzle fan is turned off for the first layer, why is this so?
Best Regards P

To achieve best adhesion possible.

Yes I understand that but as I wrote, fast cooling is god to stop PLA from warping, and slow cooling is needed for ABS to not warp?
Is the theory that only the first layer wont warp itself if its stuck to the bed even though the fan is off, but if the following layers isn't cooled quickly they'll create the bending/warping force?

My English is too poor to exact explanation, but I'll try my best. 😉
ABS warps because of thermal expansion. So you need to keep whole object as warm as possible and at the end cool down slowly to achieve uniform cooldown in all volume. This is mandatory to assure minimal warp and no cracks.
PLA warps because of behaviour of hot material near the nozzle. It sticks to nozzle and winds up when nozzle moves. Quick cooldown prevent this and keeps original printed shape. This is not necessary on first layer as the material has already sticked to bed and there's no risk of wind up.

Thanks David, that makes sense.
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
Hi, I'm and my prusa3d Mk2 are really new friends (first print last friday (two days ago)). With the new printbed and PLA, I have a very simple methode:
- clean the prindbed with alcohol
- print the 1th layer with reduced speed to (25%)
- set the speed to 100% from the second layer
And every print is an success, even very complicated ones on the 1th layer (like a cookie cutter) ... (ok I just finished my 3th print, and the 4th print is running 😉 )
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
Hi,
Which software do you use to edit the speed for the 1st layer because seems that it's a very good solution. My first printing was PRUSA logo and I needed to start it 3 times to have the good result. After I used Cura to generate the file to print a spring.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Best regards
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
Because the Flex materials like NinjaFlex or Fillamentum Flexfill 98A attach so hard to the PEI sheet i have another solution than taping the print bed, which has its own problems, different calibration only one of them. Try PVA. This film separation agent is usually used to separate epoxy-fiber composites from their negative forms. But for said flexible filaments, it works like a charm: Put a little bit on a kleenex and wipe it on your print surface. The flex will stick to it just the same as PLA to the clean surface. Afterwards, you can remove the residue with simple water.
You can get it for example here: https://shop1.r-g.de/art/165110 or at every other company which sells epoxys and carbon fibers.
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
glue? really?
I am printing with PLA, ABS, and Taulman 910 nylon and everything sticks to the bare PEI plate without any messy glue. The key is to wipe with alcohol between prints and to wipe with a paper towel and acetone once in awhile if the parts start to lift. I am printing an RC airplane now. Each part is 160 tall and uses the full capacity of the printer space. These are 12 hour prints that are very tall without much holding them to the bed. They are stuck tight! Play around with the first layer Z settings and adjust the first layer width with nylon. I went to 0.3 first layer and it helped a lot on nylon.
Forget recommending the glue Prusa and you will have much happier customers. The trick is to set the printer up properly in the first place.

The initial post for this thread is over 2 years old. When it was posted the Prusa model was the MK I which had a glass bed and required glue for the best adhesion. On the current models, glue is used for PETG and Flex materials to reduce adhesion so when removing the printed parts it doesn't damage the PEI sheet.
Re: !!! Material settings a print surface preparation 1.75mm version
Hi all
I have buy some material from the shop site ABS and PLA
This Sunday I dedicated myself to doing some tests...
Regarding the products sold PLA more precisely this article code: FLM-PLA-175-BLK...
For me is not good PLA or to better say there are cheaper products of much better quality...
I have make some test using different extrusion temperatures.
This product FLM-PLA-175-BLK
210°C Nozzle temperature
215°C Nozzle temperature
220°C Nozzle temperature
This is comparison between 11€ Cina Product and shop.prusa3d FLM-PLA-175-BLK 20,99 €
The cina 11€ product is blue
The shop.prusa3d FLM-PLA-175-BLK is Black
Cina 11€ (Bed temperature: 60° 210°C Nozzle temperature )
https://ibb.co/cZtFPG
https://ibb.co/f88tBw
shop.prusa3d FLM-PLA-175-BLK 20,99 €
https://ibb.co/fm8RWw (Bed temperature: 60° 215°C Nozzle temperature )
https://ibb.co/iNtMyb (Bed temperature: 60° 220°C Nozzle temperature )
https://ibb.co/nRwPJb (Bed temperature: 60° 215°C Nozzle temperature )
210 Impossible to print...
Any idea for this? is the quality of material? or not?
