How to manage filaments with different printers in Slic3r PE?

Unless I am mistaken the filament settings are global.
Now suppose we have an MK2MMU and an mk3 printer. The mk3 has a completely different extrusion/cooling setup. I don't think it is possible to have different filament settings per printer (for instance extruder temp, multiplier and bed temp)?

Also what worries me a bit is that stuff gets "tweaked" by Prusa wrt settings, but when you install a new version, how do you merge this in without losing your own settings? I think managing these configurations is either a bit of a nightmare when upgrading, or I am just doing things the wrong way.

As it stands now it's great if you install it, print with default settings and just install new versions as they are released, but we all know tweaking (or extra filaments) is needed.

Hi Joris,

same "problem" I have. I store the personal tweaked settings for Print Settings, Filament Settings and Printer Settings with such a name, so that I can distinguish them from the standaard PRUSA, by giving them a meaningful name for me and a date. So I can retrieve them very easy when a new version is installed. Prusa uses quiet a good way of installing them with the distinguished version numbers in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Prusa3D, as it is a Windows implementation.
Then it is up to you if you want to stay with your personal tweaked settings (just copy them to the new (version) directory where the new version is installed), and you will see them in Slic3.

Also it is up to you if you want to stay with the personal tweaked version, or use the new one, or if you want to merge your personal settings (by hand 👿 ) to the new version). I have tried to compare the newer version to the former version by comparing all the features wich can be changed, but that is a tough job. And staying with your personal tweaked settings can be a problem for instance for in the new settings for Printer Settings, TAB notes:

"Don't remove the following keywords! These keywords are used in the "compatible printer" condition of the print and filament profiles to link the particular print and filament profiles to this printer profile.
PRINTER_VENDOR_PRUSA3D
PRINTER_MODEL_MK2"

must be used.

So what I do is, that I write down (in my journal 🙂 what personal changes I have made (and why I did it), and then with the new version I decide either I will implement them ore not. (My music at the start of a print, is a simple copy from former to latest version, I just love a tune when the magic starts).

It would be very helpful if PRUSA delivered a 100% change list of all the changed/not changed items in the settings in the new version we can alter. But keep in mind they can also alter items within Slic3, we can't see, or alter and will effect our personal tweaked settings.

Maybe I have overseen an issue; reactions are warmly welcome 😆

Hey Frans:
That's quite a lot of bookkeeping, isn't it? 🙂

There are more issues with that. What for instance is annoying is that I can't set speed settings per filament. The only thing that works is putting a global slowdown in the custom g code for that filament by using M220. So if you want to tweak speed settings for PETG vs PLA, well, you're out of luck. It seems for instance that the speed difference used for PVA printing is hard coded in the app.

I really feel this software lacks a lot of configuration management. And as we all know it's impossible to get the best prints by just installing it and using the default settings. Especially on an MMU....
