another new guy with printing issues

Hi Guys,
I have an i3 mk2s printer for about 2 months. Until the last week, the printer has executed all the prints flawlessly. At the last prints the following problem occurs again and again. Single layers are not complete with fillament. I suspect a problem with the extruder could not determine the exact cause yet. Maybe one of you has an idea or the same problem. I am grateful for any help.

First thing I notice is that this seems to be happening at a similar height in the print. Check for freedom of movement of everything at different heights. Also that the filament isn't binding or hanging or somehow getting restricted from movement at some point.
What else has recently changed? New filament?

As you have been printing fine for a while, I would check and clean the extruder drive pulley and grub screw, remove, check and replace (if necessary) the PTFE tube and consider changing the nozzle.

Before you do that, just check the filament is feeding smoothly and not tangled on the spool.

Thanks for the quick replies. So I cleaned the nozzle and viewed the extruder. Looks all fine to me. The filament roll is exactly wrapped and can move easily. I have not changed anything. The same settings and the same fillament as usual.
It seems that it always happens at the same layer height, but it is not so. Today I wanted to print something and had the same problem. It starts well and after a time the extruder begins to knock strange and does not extrude any more fillament. Even the retracting no longer worked.

Re: another new guy with printing issues

Sounds like it is clogging up. Most common things are printing to fast, temp off for print speed and filament, over extruding and heat creep.
When it quits printing/extruding. Has it jammed/clogged or did it stop feeding filament and the extruder is empty? If it is empty then something may be restricting the filament movement.
If it is clogging then slow down the print speed and also watch the temps to see if they drop or do something weird when it acts up.

Is the extruder gear loose?

I would go to a new roll of filament and see fi that changes anything.

Approach it like a flow chart and a process of elimination.
Does it clog or starve for filament?
If a clog then why? Temps, speed, retraction to aggressive ?
If starve then why does it stop feeding?

Go from there!

Re: another new guy with printing issues

Another possibility is a crimped wire in your wire bundle that is triggered at certain bends (e.g. at certain Z heights).

If so, this will get steadily worse, and thus easier to diagnose.

In my case it was the wires from the thermocouple which would make the printer think the head was (intermittently) cooler than it was, causing it to ramp up heat and make very similar issues to the ones you are seeing. It was from an overly aggressive zip tie placement. Once soldered in correctly the problem has gone away for good.

Others have seen this type of issue if the heat break fan (the one on the left) is intermittent. This lets the heat break get too hot and the filament melts too soon, causing a clog. This can also happen if the printer is in a very hot enclosure and the fan can't keep the heat break cool enough.

aaron makes a really good point which I forgot to make!! Pinched wires or exposed wires or a loose connection.

ABS Problems
Quote

I am new to ABS, and am using 3D Solutech Natural Clear 1.75mm ABS 3D Printer Filament. My prints all come out the same. the bottom 1/4 of the print is off and takes an hour glass shape, while the top 3/4 is how it should print. This picture is a 40mm test cube. the top is accurate as hell and the bottom is all funky. I am slicing it with Simplify3d.
BED: 100c with ABS Juice
Nozzle: 225c with E3d sock
No Fan set
Rectilinear infill and exterior pattern
10 lines of brim
Printer semi-enclosed with cardboard.

PLEASE HELP ME EXPLAIN WHY ALL MY PRINTS COME OUT LIKE THIS WITH ABS.
