Why is it asking for a filament change mid print?

New printer, did a couple test prints, latest firmware , latest Slic3r and twice during a print it asked to unload and load filament.
I unload it and reload the same filament and it works fine, but real annoying.

ive had this a couple times a few prints ago. not sure whats causing it, hasn't happened since updating to f/w b138, but may just be a coincidence . today i used a can of computer duster and blew out the extruder through the opening, and noticed a few stripped off pieces of filament.

The printer is detecting a loss of filament.. likely a dirty sensor. As the previous post said; just remove the little plug and blow out the sensor with compressed air; then remove plug. Apparently the plug is to eliminate false fails from lighting.

It isn't saying it is out of filament, it is wanting to change it.
The printer stops and beeps asking to push the button to eject the filament. Then asks to insert the filament.

That's what the MK3 is supposed to do when it thinks it has run out of filament though I believe. Have you tried turning off the filament sensor entirely to see if that temporarily fixes things?

I can see your point or sure, but what you describe is exactly how the mk3 functions with a loss of filament. It uses the same script for planned changes as well

This happened to me a couple of times. The last time it woke me and the kids in the middle of the night and got them worried. If this is a question of dirt on the filament sensor, then it should trigger it all the time. But it's totally random. Doesn't make any sense.

HI there,

to further diagnose your problem, we need to know:
- does the "error" occur on any print, or only with an specific gcode file?
- wich filament do you use?

sincerly yours
Christian

Using black PTEG by any chance? The optical sensor has problems with this type of filament. You’ll need to disable it.

Shiny or black filament does this

I have very same problem, glossy black PETG filament. No problem with black PLA. How do you turn off sensor?
