Which hot End do I have? on my I3 Mk3

I had a twisted plastic corkscrew of Doom last night, it ripped the wires off.
I have seen the Hot end of the I3 Mk3 Listed as a E3d V6, and E3d V6.1 and a E3d V6 lite, which one is correct, there is a local shop that has e3d stuff in stock need to know which one to buy so I can get back up and running.

if it has the E3d V6 Lite, can I upgrade to a E3d V6 All metal keeping in mind I have to use the stock mounts as I do not have ability to print new parts with this printer down

if it has the E3d V6 is it an off the shelf 24v E3d Product or on edited for Prusa can I use any real E3d V6

If it is a E3d v6.1 I can't even find that listed on E3d web site

Which one can I order and directly fit the Stock Prusa I3 Mk3 with the stock mounts and wiring?

couldn't you just order it from Prusa? their shipping is really quick for the few replacements I've need.

I'm sure support could confirm this easily (haven't heard about a 6.1 but you could just compare the dimensions if not https://e3d-online.dozuki.com/c/V6_Drawings ), but the the replacement parts site lists this:

Prusa does ship fast but not as fast as I can drive the 30 minutes to a local shop that has e3d parts in stock if I just knew exactly which model to purchase

It’s an E3D v6,

You’ll need to look on E3D for assembly guide and you need to assemble the nozzle and heat break a specific way. I.e hot 🙂

i'd love a picture to say for sure but you should only need the 40w heater cartridge and the thermistor. while you are there maybe pick up the silicone socks too.

Note that the MK3 has a non-standard (mk3 specific) heat break, if I recall having to do with the filament sensor (don't hold me to that reason). From order page for replacement part: "Custom heatbreak made together with E3D for the Original Prusa i3 MK3 and Multi-material upgrades."

Check with Support if you can swap in a whole new unit. Very possible that the dimensions of a stock E3D v6 do not fit. Support's generally overwhelmed, but they do work 24 hours/day and can give solid answers, just need a bit of patience.

Re: Which hot End do I have? on my I3 Mk3

E3D V6 Lite was for the Mk1 Prusa...

E3D V6 was used on the Mk2 Prusa,

the Mk2 MMU required a different geometry inside the heatbreak, not sure it had an official E3D designation.
the PTFE on the MMU has an internal taper at the top, inside...

Mk3 uses same extruder as MMU... but I would expect the standard E3D V6 to provide similar results I would ensure that the top of the PTFE had a similar internal taper to help guide the filament into the extruder during loading

the E3D standard thermistor has a plug and socket behind the extruder, most Prusa users cut this out, and solder the ends together using sleeving

this reduces the chance of it coming unplugged during a print...

I would consider getting a spare thermistor at the same time

So one more vote for it is a E3dv XX sorta I wish someone could tell me exactly, like I said I talked to Prusa Support and can't get a straight answer maybe it is the language I use. guess I have to pay 55 bucks for shipping and wait three weeks 🙁

Even the parts page is confusing the E3D Heatbreak listed for the MK3 shows a red section but the replacment hot end also listed for the MK3 does not show this in the image

Where are you ordering from that shipping is $55 and you have to wait 3 weeks? For me, an extra hot end and thermistors are $20 shipped via DHL in 5 business days for $20 on the prusa shop. Shipping will start to go crazy after 1kg.

Re: Which hot End do I have? on my I3 Mk3

After chatting with tech support, I was told that the hotend for the mk3 i3 is an E3D v6.1 which is the E3D v6 but with a custom modification for Prusa. I think this is due to the filament sensor but not sure. I have only had mine for about 3 weeks and after firmware update to 3.1.2 during an overnight print, it ran out of filament and started to beep requesting a new spool, I was asleep in the other room and several hours later, I checked on it, the teflon (PTFE) tube inside the heatsink had melted, the black secure ring ((Bowden coupling??) in the top of the heatsink had melted and the entire thing was totally plugged. This is the reason I tried to find out about the specific hotend so that I could get parts to get my printer up and running again.

Can't you take your hot end to your local dealer and match the pars and see what is maybe different then make a mod to get it working if it's not a stock heat break?

So did you figure out what the best option is? I've literally just run into the same issue. Plugged nozzle that couldn't be cold pulled or cleared the easy way so as i removed the hotend and rotated it down, and pop, there goes the heater cartridge wires... i see that the thermistor cartridge wires are so small, they will surely be next.. I'm wondering if a new 24v heater cartridge from amazon will fix it..

Hi Mark,
heater cartridges are pretty generic, as long as you get the voltage correct, the Mk3 heater is 24volt... because Prusa have changed the mk3 power supply for better stepper motor performance

most older 3d printers use the older 12volt standard, which is not suitable for the mk3 printer

The only change in the V6 vs Prusa's version of the V6 is the heatbreak. The heatbreak has a smaller orifice to try to prevent jamming in which ( my opinion) causes more Jams. I would of just built a V6 or ordered the Gold edition V6 with all the bells and whistles. If you really wanted to get crazy, I would replace the stock heatbreak from that and go E3d Titanium heatbreak.
I have done all of these upgrades and it was well worth it.

Re: Which hot End do I have? on my I3 Mk3

Since a few days E3D has a technical document about the modified heatbreak for Prusa printers: https://e3d-online.dozuki.com/Document/WKUGPLmiMEGdwuCD/.pdf Compared to the normal heartbreak ( https://e3d-online.dozuki.com/Document/I2woGboCqjNEBkIx/.pdf ) there is a wider inner diameter in the upper part of the heatbreak. Does anyone know why? I changed my heartbreak to a titanium heatbreak with the E3D diameter and everything works fine.

Re: Which hot End do I have? on my I3 Mk3

Hi Elmar,

some time ago Prusa found that they were getting a lot of Filament Jams on their MMUv1 product, they found that modifying the heatbreak helped.

they also found that the mk2 printer worked happily with the revised heatbreak, so rather than maintain two different heatbreaks, they swapped to only supplying the modified heatbreak,

if you don't have MMUv1 or MMUv2, a standard e3dv6 heatbreak will work fine

RE: Which hot End do I have? on my I3 Mk3

There is a YouTube Video about the WHY and WHY it is stupid, if you dont own a MMU:

I just ordered a normal e3dv6 Heat Break. Got lots of Yams after printing 2h straight on. Good printer, but this discission was not so good to put this heat break of the mmu into the normal printer.
