What spare parts are good to have around for the MK3?

Hello everyone,

First of all, I apologize if this topic has already been covered before but I wasn’t able to find much by using the search function on the forum.

I ordered my MK3 a couple of weeks ago and based on the experience I had with my first printer I thought that it’d be a good idea to start sourcing some spare parts for it while waiting, just in case I might need them in the future. I’m talking about things like bolts, nuts, timing belts, bowden tubing, etc.

So, what parts you guys make sure to always keep around for your printers? I understand that the MK3 is a pretty new machine, but I think it should be similar enough to the MK2 for many of the parts that’s good to have around for one to also be the same for the other. Does anyone happen to have some kind of list?

For me, nozzles. Cheap Chinese ones on ebay or aliexpress are just fine. When I get a clog or partial clog, I will try and clear it with a cold pull once or twice. If that does not work. New nozzle. I just bought 25 .4mm nozzles for $20.

Next, print extruder parts as soon as you get your printer. I had a failure that damaged my printed extruder parts on my MK2. Had to buy a printed one on ebay. So, before you wind up with a blob/tumor, print these parts and have then on hand.

90-91% Isopropyl alcohol and acetone for cleaning the PEI bed. A 7mm socket wrench and 17mm spanner for changing nozzles. A nice set of needle nose pliers (but Prusa gives you these for free with your printer). An exacto knife set for trimming brims are strings from parts. A set of digital calipers for measuring filament consistency and calibration parts once you have printed some.

Thats all I can think of right now...

Thanks for the reply, fortunately I already have everything listed except of the extruder parts. I’ve read that the MK3 uses PETG for everything except for the extruder assembly which is printed in ABS. Do you think it's going to be an issue if I print my extruder replacements from PETG instead?

Totally agree. Having everything before you have a problem is key to keeping a happy printer owner. Having two works as well.

What I never see mentioned is a pad of paper and a pencil. Better yet keep a notebook for each printer, filament manufacturer, and slicer. And a camera. When you post here with a problem, and you probably will, nine times out of ten the first response is "Pictures?" If you have a phone camera that is usually good enough.

Got any link for correct aliexpress nozzles?

Apparently a PSU. Mine failed and it seems like it is not all that uncommon.

Both fans... Not so much because they might fail, but because they are exposed to external solid objects, like forceps when you go to pluck a blob off the bed. Nothing quite like the sound of a 7 blade fan running with only 6 blades.

Where can you get a replacement blower for the Mk3? I can't find any with a speed sensor and the bearings are failing in mine.

I'd go with the list below for parts:

1. Nozzles
2. Extruder parts
3. PSU
3. linear Bearings

anybody know the prices of OEM PSU from prusa and any good source for alternatives?

You don't need a spare PSU. If yours breaks, just contact prusa support and they'll send you a working one.

Re: What spare parts are good to have around for the MK3?

Jon, I purchase my parts and some filament from https://spool3d.ca/ . I see https://www.voxelfactory.com/ (look under 3D Printing Solutions) is now carrying some parts. i bought my printer and some filament from Voxel Factory.

Although they don't have parts, I thought I would mention https://filaments.ca/ as I buy most of my filament from them (large selection) and they now have quality 1 kg PLA filament rolls for $15.95, a real bargain.

Thanks Michael!
I looked on spool 3D and did not see any, though they need a search function!
I will check the other.
Cheers,
Jon

I've been wondering the same thing. I've printed with PLA and PETG so far, and don't think my setup is conducive to using ABS (printing in a rather cold garage, with no enclosure). My extruder parts already melted a little (when dealing with a particularly uncooperative clog early on), but not in a way that damaged functionality.
Should I print emergency replacement parts for the extruder components in PETG, or would PETG be useless for that? Is it worth trying to print ABS for it (without drastically modifying my printer's setup)?

Well worth having spare printed parts if you are only operating a single printer. Re extruder and PETG, that is what Prusa use now on all printers for the extruder and all other parts. The only part left in ABS is the print fan shroud.

Is this the right size PTFE tubing in the hotend?
3mmOD and 2MM ID

Jon, That is the correct size PFTE tube. It is shipped from China and can take a while to arrive but if you need it now here is the one I bought from SPOOL3D https://spool3d.ca/ptfe-teflon-tube/
