Using and Existing Raspberry Pi 3
Hello,
I should have my MK3 finished tonight. For my current Mk2 I have a Pi3 setup with octopi. I know there has been a lot of work to get octo pi working directly connected to the MK3 with a fair deal of problems. If there any problem going with my current setup and just connecting my pi3 using the usb cable to the printer. Are there any disadvantages to this setup?

I have a raspberry pi connect directly through USB. Seems to work fine right now. Install the latest firmware as of about a week ago.
During December, there were some issues with the serial stream getting garbled because the processor was overloaded (could cause random fails, hangs, or shifted layers). I saw only two y-shifted parts, but it didn't seem to happen off SD, only off USB.
Since linear advance was disabled in the firmware I have had no issue. My prints are only 1-5 hours long, but no problems.
I'm running a clean release of latest raspbian, with octopi and pi-camera software and streaming software installed from source on top of it.

It should work just fine. That is what I did, pulled a RPi 2 off another printer and plugged it into the MK3 and away we went.
However, I have been running the directly attached RPi Zero W on the MK3 for several firmware revisions now, and the Octoprint results have been on par with the SD card prints. There is an occasional fail on each, but both have been very reliable.

I had issues with the PI zero W, and just connected the PI3, via the headers and a cable I made directly to the board and haven't had problems.

If I am not mistaken, someone here was selling pre-fab cables for just that purpose. Fine if you don't want to fuss with it, and the quality looked very nice as well as the price.

Using my Pi 3 connected to my MK3 via USB, no issues with RC5.
Dis an 18 hour print which worked fine.
