Strange calibration issue

So as a bit of background i built my mk3 kit about two weeks ago and did not have any issues at all. It's been printing almost non stop since then. I have been very impressed with it so far.

I printed two of the stackable trays from thingiverse at 200% and both printed flawlessly. During the print of a third (which was running over night) the attached happened. I though it was a layer shift as a result of low belt tension on the X so I checked tension (215) and tried to rerun the calibration wizard.

It gets to the XYZ part and fails in a wierd way. During the auto home the pinda homes in about 6-7 cm too far to the right. Nowhere near the marking on the print bed. During the 4 point calibration the first point is too far right and when it gets to the 2nd point the extruder is so far right to the point where the pinda is off the print bed and homing over air. This of course results in the print head picking up the paper and I have to shut the machine down.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Any suggestions? I tried online support but they were swamped and told me to email and I have not had a response since yesterday.

Edit: I forgot to mention I'm running firmware 3.1.3 and I did try a reset all in factory reset after the wizard failed a few times.

It may also be worth noting that this was the first time I used the simplify 3D profile that Mr. Prusa posted on the forums. Before that I was using the stock profile in S3D.

Re: Strange calibration issue

Hi Martin,

if twoI would look for obstructions to the movement of the axis,
the X and Y axis dont have end stops, they rely on current rise sensing. when the X and Y carriage hit the ends of the frame, the drive current increases and the stepper motor driver recognises this as the end of travel.

if there is an unexpected resistance to movement, this can cause errors.

look for obstructions, overtight idlers, poor lubrication, contamination on the smooth rods, sticking linear bearings, filament catching on something

basically anything that can cause a restriction to movement

regards Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

Well I think I found the issue. I was making sure the rods were clean and noticed a rough spot. It looks like the linear bearing on the bottom of the X axis has scored the rod pretty badly.

Does a magnet stick to your rods?

I believe they are supposed to stick. (some rods were shipped for a while that were wrong.

Hi, I'm Sean. I used to work on CNC machines.
I try to not make mistakes, but the decision is YOURS.
Please feel free to donate to my filament/maintance fund.

Yes, a magnet does stick to them.

Re: Strange calibration issue

I got in touch with Prusa support and they are going to replace the rods and bearings for me. We'll see what happens 🙂
