Running Out of Filament

My MK3 kit has been printing almost 24 hours a day with no problems. The prints are for a BB-8 model. The dome is 99% printed and I', about a third of the way through the panels for the inner sphere. Each panel is about 10 hours of print time.

I had a low reel of filament and I decided to test its ability to recognize a "filament out" condition. At about 7 hours of printing, I cut the input filament and waited. It just continued to march, didn't know that it was out of plastic. 😥 I thought it would stop and ask me to load a new reel and then it would continue on. No luck.

I loaded a full reel and went to bed. Darn. 🙁 Not as smart as I thought it was. Good night.

Re: Running Out of Filament

Did you activate your filament sensor in the settings? It's off by default.

Are you using octoprint? seems that crash detection and filament sensor aren't completely functional with octoprint (yet) that's one of those frimware kinks that i suspect will be ironed out in time.

ibn, Thank you, you are right. The "Filament Sensor" was off. I feel stupid 😳 I've set it to "on" and will try it again tonight.

Re: Running Out of Filament

I turned the "Filament Sensor" on and started a long print.
About an hour in the print the machine started to beep and when I heard it the extruder had stopped and was at the front of the bed and the screen was blank.

Now, this might be my mistake..... I clicked the button and the screen came alive and said something like "is the filament loaded? I answered "yes" and it moved the extruder back over the print and started extruding. Unfortunately it was laying down about .02" (1/5mm) high. I stopped the print and said some naughty words. 👿

So, I guess my machine cannot see accurately my White Tianse filament.

While we are on this subject. Is there a proper way to stop a print, unload the filament, reload a new reel of filament and then resume printing? I see the commands on the screen but should I be able to activate these commands and still return to the print where I had stopped?

Thank you.

While printing click the wheel, go to tune, go to change filament, click
It will lead you through.

I've also noted that the filament jam detection is not working or must need to meet a pretty high threshold before it notices
