Rough top layer

Hi All, I'm fairly new to 3D printing been having a blast with my MK3 so far, my prints have been coming out pretty good but, I still have a problem with getting the final layer smooth, I mean it's ok but I've seen other peoples prints and there's looks great. Been reading where I need to turn off the Z lift. I'm using Simplify 3d just not sure what has to be turned off?

I'm guessing with no pictures or details of top texture... Heh...
I would hazard a guess that you are suffering from over extrusion.

Check https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1622868

Follow the instructions there, and see if that helps.

Would need pictures to give any other advice.

Re: Rough top layer

If your first layer is too close to the build surface it will get plow ridges on either side of the placed filament that is rough.

Sorry for not posting any pic's. Ok I printed out the over and under extrusion test that you suggested, and it came out very good, it fits together and there's no gaps. I did a live Z calibration out of red pla and that came out nice and smooth as you can see. Now the maker coin s where I'm at now it's rather rough. Been trying everything and that's as smooth as I can get it.

I think I see your problem... if it's what I think it is... It's not what you wanna hear.

Give this a try.

The "test" we are looking for, is is it "smoother" away from the "edge" of the lines. (rough near the sides, smoother towards center)

I think you are having "over extrusion" at the "end" of the extrusion lines.

Using S3D you can use "Coasting" (I think it has that) to resolve that issue. Your other option is to wait for the 3.2 firmware to be released on the printer... or if you wanna be really daring, download+compile+flash the 3.2 firmware yourself... 😉 I can confirm as of the most recent commit, it is working.
