Remove filament sensor for cold pulls?

Hey all.

Just asking everyone's opinion. I recently did a full upgrade mk2s to mk3. Had a few hiccups on the build but it's working now. Filament sensor worked after install. But like others I had a jam. Went to unload filament and it wouldn't come out. So I foracbly pulled it out rather then opening side door and clearing jam. This of course damaged the filament sensor. Prusa has already sent a replacement, which I have installed.

So last night my 1st mk3, started making a clicking sound and then eventually parked the head for a jam. I had been printing PET and switched to PLA. I ran cleaning filament through first, but that apparently wasn't enough.
Given the experience I had on the upgraded mk2s to mk3, I decided to take extruder door off, and remove filament sensor for before doing cold pulls. Should this be standard practice for MK3's with cold pulls? As to not damage filament sensor.

Removing jams forcefully is damaging alot of filament sensors, I'm not the only one. Even the firmware has been updated to warn user if filament doesn't eject cleanly, clear jam by opening door.

What do u guys think?
Is a filament jam different from a cold pull as far as potentially damaging the sensor?

I don't remove the filament sensor for cold pulls. Cold pulls don't have a big ball of filament on the end that will get snagged on stuff like when you get a filament jam. If you're concerned, removing the sensor isn't difficult anyway. Just take the extra 2 minutes for the peace of mind.

Since it is such an easy procedure I think I will remove it for jams and cold pulls, just for piece of mind. Im not as confident as you cold pulls wont effect the filament sensor.
Replacement sensor take a few days to arrive, and I dont know how long prusa3d will keep replacing them for free. Almost like a redesigned may be necessary as far as jams and filament sensors go.

Re: Remove filament sensor for cold pulls?

If there's a blob of material on the end of the filament that's getting snagged and hard to pull out, there's an easier way to get it out without forcibly pulling through:

  • Pull the filament up until it requires some force.

  • Cut the filament just above where it exits the extruder.

  • Open the access door to the Bondtech gears.

  • Use a needlenose pliers or tweezers to remove the short piece of filament.
