PSA: Check the magnets under the heatbed for any misplaced/lost hardware during disassembly

Just wanted to share this so others don't spend a good 45 min crawling on their hands and knees looking for a lost spring.

I was modding my extruder assembly with a longer PTFE tube for flexible materials and finally gave up looking for a missing Bondtech tension idler spring. "Luckily" when I was putting the bolts back in the hex key slipped, bounced off the counter, and stuck to the magnets causing an "Aha!" moment. The spring was actually stuck to the same magnet!

I had a similar issue. Except I'm rather UPSET about it.

I dropped TWO of my 8$ allen wrenches. (Yeah, 9 wrenches, 75$ delivered) and they found those blasted magnets.

They are EXTREMELY magnetized now. I can't put them near ANYTHING without what feels like them shooting across the room trying to escape my fingers.

I had always put off ordering a magnetize/de-magnetize for them... but I kinda have to now... Thanks Prusa for breaking 16$ of allen wrenches. (kinda) now I have to spend ~10$ and get the magnetize/de-magnetize to fix them.

TL;DR

Keep your expensive tools away from the heat bed. It's EXTREMELY dangerous to their magnetism.

TL;DR 2

If you wanna magnetize a screwdriver we know how to now.

Hi, I'm Sean. I used to work on CNC machines.
I try to not make mistakes, but the decision is YOURS.
Please feel free to donate to my filament/maintance fund.

hm,

there are many ways to demagnetize metal.

You might buy a strong neodymium magnet, put it to rotation using e.g. a motor, and then slowly move your (expensive;-)) tools along side it. The magnetism should go as fast as it came - that is my guess.

You could check out his video for inspiration - that is what I base my assumption here on:

That's funny, and yes it happened to me also. In fact today I was pulling the heat bed cover off and momentarily "lost" my Allen wrench.
