Problem with ‚Calibrate XYZ‘

Hi guys,

I have two problems with the ‚Calibrate XYZ‘ part (using firmware 3.1.1-RC1 b122)

1: The ‘Calibrate XYZ’ fails with the error “XYZ calibration failed. Please consult the manual.” Like the manual suggests I used a sheet of paper to adjust the space between nozzle and the heatbed and reduced the height of the PINDA probe. I repeated this until the error was fixed, but the probe is now touching the heatbeds surface. In addition, this violates assembly instruction of the paper manual on page 24 “…Keep in mind, the probe must be always higher than the nozzle tip…”. If the distance between the probe was to high, the ‘selftest’ throws an error at the z-Axis part or in ‘Calibrate XYZ’ it does not go further as “Searching bed calibration point 2 of 4”. The latter will be aborted through a thrown timeout with the message “…point was not found.”

I don’t know how to resolve this problematic. Other assumptions are, either the probe is broken or (which is unlikely) that the induction pads in the heatbed are to weak.

2: If I ignore the ‘probe is two low’ problematic and the first part of the ‘Calibrate XYZ’ completes I don’t know how to attach the steel sheet to the heatbed and proceed with the calibration. The steel sheet is thicker as the sheet of paper, that’s why I have to manually increase the space between nozzle and heatbed and shove the sheet under the nozzle. Here I have my second problem. Is this the correct way? I am missing a few manual instructions here, because should I do this while the calibration process is running (and waiting for the ‘have attached steel sheet acknowledge 'click'’) or do I have to power off the printer, attach sheet, power on and so on?

I would be happy if someone would post a video of this process, because that should be the easiest HOWTO or rather method to solve my problem (I did not find one; or even a video of the whole wizard calibration process).

General info:

The XYZ calibration has two parts: calibrating x/y and seeing if the bed is square, then the Z part. I'll focus on the z part. (This is based on my build last night, so ymmv)

When you do it without the steel sheet, what it is doing is trying to learn where the Pinda probe response is relative to the tip of the nozzle. The piece of paper is not in any way adjusting the height, it is simply protecting the bed a bit if the nozzle drops too low. If the nozzle hits the paper, the instructions say to adjust the pinda (down, I think) and try again.

It doesn't need the steel sheet for this, as it is simply measuring the effective PINDA probe height. Once it knows the pinda height, it will use the pinda sensor to know when to stop, regardless of what sheet you put down.

The fine tuning on z height will happen with 'first layer calibration' when you have completed the z calibration and put the sheet back on.

you are right that it has to do with the z-axis, but it seems my (first) problematic was unclear. I have the problem that the PINDA probe has to be mounted very low because calibration process detect nothing (at least not enough to continue) and my printer is now not complied with page 24 in paper manual regarding minimum distance between probe, nozzle and headbed surface.

The fine tuning on z height will happen with 'first layer calibration' when you have completed the z calibration and put the sheet back on.
Ok, I understand what you mean, but my problem number two lies before I reach this step.

Right now I have to resolve both problems to take on 'first layer calibration'.

Solved the problems myself.

After more testing and cable rearrangement I found a working setup for problem one (casted some magic 😀 ).
Information for problem two: I manually increased the height of the z-axis by four steps (base space between nozzle and heatbed was a paper sheet) and was able to shove the steel sheet under the nozzle to complete the calibration.

EDIT: my (real) problem occured through a weird jamming behavior with at the z-axis motors. Had to reassemble/adjust the different rods. Now everything works.
