Re: poor print quality : Cooling Issue

Pretty much the same as the others.. Heavy curling on the overhang on benchy and quite bad ringing.

I reduced the speed by 50% on the LCD and reduced the temp to 205 nozzle 50 bed but i'm pretty sure it was just the speed that made the difference.

Not sure what happened to the smoke stack, probably because it was going way too slow..

I've had almost every print with overhang fail due to curling 🙁

Re: poor print quality : Cooling Issue

In the ABS filament profiles the cooling fan is set to off.
Is that intentional?

PLA:
# generated by Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.38.5-prusa3d-win64 on 2017-12-26 at 16:52:11
bed_temperature = 60
bridge_fan_speed = 100
compatible_printers =
compatible_printers_condition =
cooling = 1
disable_fan_first_layers = 1
end_filament_gcode = "; Filament-specific end gcode"
extrusion_multiplier = 1
fan_always_on = 1
fan_below_layer_time = 100

ABS:
# generated by Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.38.5-prusa3d-win64 on 2017-12-26 at 16:52:11
bed_temperature = 100
bridge_fan_speed = 30
compatible_printers =
compatible_printers_condition =
cooling = 0
disable_fan_first_layers = 3
end_filament_gcode = "; Filament-specific end gcode"
extrusion_multiplier = 1
fan_always_on = 0
fan_below_layer_time = 20

The ABS profile should be more or less as the one for HIPS?
# generated by Slic3r Prusa Edition 1.38.5-prusa3d-win64 on 2017-12-26 at 16:52:11
bed_temperature = 100
bridge_fan_speed = 50
compatible_printers =
compatible_printers_condition =
cooling = 1
disable_fan_first_layers = 3
end_filament_gcode = "; Filament-specific end gcode"
extrusion_multiplier = 0.9
fan_always_on = 1
fan_below_layer_time = 10

Edit: I think I found the answer myself, from RepRap.org:

Cooling is mostly just for PLA. PLA can create some pretty good overhangs and bridges with active cooling of the plastic as its laid down. It has little warp and so can take the cooling pretty well. ABS wants as little cooling as possible due to its high tendency to warp with temperature differences. In fact, ABS hates the cold so much that you should really print it in a heated chamber between 40-70c.

Re: poor print quality : Cooling Issue

Does anyone have benchy settings and results from a MK2s?

I'm pretty sure most of these issues are from trying to show off or push the limits of the hardware, whereas most of us would rather a slower more quality print.

I'm 1/2 thinking of going back to my MK2s slicer settings and seeing how it goes.

Re: poor print quality : Cooling Issue

I haven't had any cooling issues with my mk3. I just did a test run with the pre-sliced benchy on the SD card with my black filament. No overhang issue on the bow of the boat. There is some ringing, but nothing too bad. I'm comparing this with my MK2 (red benchy that I sliced).

On which firmware was your printer while printing this files from your SD card? Is there any way to find out with which version of slic3r they where sliced? I am still confused with all that problems and different firmwares, drivers and slic3r versions.

Should be fixed in the new drivers https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3-f30/slic3r-pe-over-extrusion-and-cooling-solved-t12949.html

No idea on the settings Prusa Research used to slice it. Its already pre-sliced on the SD Card.
My printer is on firmware 138, I had too many issues with 143. I could not get a long print to finish. No problem with 138.

My point is I see a lot of these print cooling issues are on the PLA that came with the printer. Mine is still in the box as I have silver PLA (almost a full roll) that needs to be used first. I wonder if the issues many are having are specifically with the Silver Prusa PLA.

Re: poor print quality : Cooling Issue

I did a test benchy using the latest firmware RC4 B143 on the printer and the driver 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 for the slic3r. There are some slight improvements on the benchy in terms of the ringing but I did notice with the driver 2.1.2 their is still aspects of ringing and also it introduced some minor stringing. These were printed with esun pla+

The front of benchy 2.1.2 looks identical to 2.1.1, I have also re-tightened / re-loosened the belts on the x and y axis but I still haven't solved the problem of ringing in my benchys and other parts, I have tried different filaments and I get the same results. These benchys still dont look as good as my Mk2s prints.

Thanks Joe,

I downloaded the latest drivers and sample prints and re-printed the benchy.

Much better than before, but still a little bit of curling on the bow overhang.

It's 30+ deg C here in Australia which may be contributing?

As suggested the boat is turned 90 deg so the bow gets more air, there is still a bit of ringing, but not bad 🙂

With the new settings i get a perfect overhang on the bow.

Did you check if the settings updated??

Or better yet, did you try using the latest gcode benchy (thats what i did)?

Re: poor print quality : Cooling Issue

Am I right in thinking that the changes will have little effect/improvement on the Benchy included on the SD as it's already pre-sliced with the wrong Settings?

As new updates are released, so are new gcodes, you need to get rid (or save them for testing purposes) of the old gcodes and copy the new ones to the SD card.

They are stored in Prusa3D folder on My Documents

Has anyone tried printing with the update? I would love to see pictures, my printer is currently in storage as I move next week. 😥

I'm not using Slic3r right now but i did try the benchy with Slic3r latest profile to see what kinda of improvement i could get... And i am pretty happy with it... the bow came out perfect!

Yes, this is the latest version of benchy that comes with the download hence why i noted the print orientation is different.

The 0.35 layer height setting is gone too, so i'm pretty confident it updated properly.

Is someone having cooling issues after flashing final 3.1.1?
For some reason I started having problems...

Re: poor print quality : Cooling Issue

I was also having the same cooling issue. I printed the original Benchy that was on the SD Card and it has the bad bow. I then read some info in the forums and replaced the GCode files on the SD Card and was running firmware 150 with the 2.1.3. I did the same Benchy and got the same result. At this point I was using the Prusa Roll that I got with the printer. I then decided to reslice the Benchy with the same settings but I had the bow facing to the right. Assuming you are facing the printer.

I printed and got the same issue on the bow. 😳
So I had just got a new roll of Copper color Hatchbox PLA. I decided to just see what happens. The Benchy came out Perfect. This was all the same settings as the last print. 215 first layer. 210 for the other layers all the same speed settings etc...

I also did the Adalinda Print in the some 3D Solutech Ultra Blue filament and noticed that on the back of the wings it is very ruff. My thought cooling. When I got the results of the Benchy with the Hatchbox PLA I decided to print the test Adalinda and the back of the wings came out perfect.

It seems some filaments just cool better than others, I'm not really sure. But I wanted to post my finds.

I will add the other in the next post.

Ignore the layer shift.
