Highlights:

  • Almost caught up with preorders, almost 8,000 MK3 units shipped to date.

  • Still having problems with powder coated sheets. No longer willing to commit to a date when they will ship because they've been burned twice before.

  • New firmware is released today with bug fixes and improvements in power/crash recovery.

  • Linear advance coming back with a firmware update mid-March.

  • Upgrade kits start shipping Monday.

  • MK3 MMU will be delayed until May, and will be a whole new design, MMU 2.0. This will be cheaper, so preorders will get a credit. It should also be more reliable, as it eliminates the bowden design and the problematic multiplexer.
  • As someone who has a MK3 MMU preorder, I'm really thrilled to hear about the last point. It sounds like they've been listening to the problems people have been having and decided to do a ground-up redesign of the MMU.

    MMU is tempting me now. I had signed it off strictly because it was bowden based. This new unit should be compatible with my upgrade to Flex3Drive (if it ever ships).

    I don't like the top of the frame mounting. Hopefully it will be configurable on that tube length so it can be located off the printer.

    This new MMU has definitely put multi material back on my radar 🙂

    They should really remove the PC steel sheets from the specs list on the webpage till they figure this out. They are now advertising something they wont even give a ETA on, so obviously they are not confident it will happen soon or possibly even ever, but yet still list it as a major feature on the store page, that doesn't sit well with me.

    I have to agree these hints at MMU 2 have renewed my interest in the concept as well. Can't wait to see it expounded on some more...

    I’m glad I ordered an MMU now, and I’ll even get a refund for some off it, I can’t help but think it’s going to be a load of hassle, but I hope not lol 😂

    I wish they would do a double hot end MMU for twin material only. That way we can at least have a reliable way of putting in support and I feel would take the standard printer to another level without the uncertainty and problems that a true MMU could bring. Unless of course they really can get the true MMU working well, in which case this will be an exceptional piece of kit.

    I wish they would do a double hot end MMU for twin material only. That way we can at least have a reliable way of putting in support and I feel would take the standard printer to another level without the uncertainty and problems that a true MMU could bring. Unless of course they really can get the true MMU working well, in which case this will be an exceptional piece of kit.

    I don't see how they could get the MMU to reliably work with multiple material types. The main issue is something that was brought up by another forum user (can't remember who) - when using materials, which require different temperatures (PLA and Flex, for example), how do you fully purge the old material from the nozzle prior to changing the temperature? Without a full purge between material switches, you would end up with various extrusion issues.

    I could see this working with materials, which are close enough in extrusion temps but that would limit the number of materials that the MMU works with. For the most part, the MMU is mostly MCU (multi-color unit). I would be very interested in reading something on this topic from the man, himself.

    Dual nozzles is a pain, a real pain. Not just levelling both nozzle but the ooze. It’s pretty advanced printing and also very time consuming as you need to cool each nozzle after use to help with ooze.

    In general most materials that could be combined have mostly similar printing temps I’ve found.

    another idea to have a way not only to work with different filaments but to make new and interesting colours by mixing filaments together in a colour wheel, how about this approach to blending filament colors of the same type, similar like our good old colour printers? this can be for an entirely new system mk4 or 5 mmu.

    This sounds insanely complex. But the resulting product that could do literally any of millions of colors would fly off the shelf so fast it would break the sound barrier.

    I know I'm no engineer, but I dislike all that top-mounting - it seems to me that it would make the printer more unstable? Isn't vibration of the Z axis a serious problem with cheap printers, hence the braces that are modded in? (I'm thinking at the Wanhao i3.)

    Still, a new design for the MMU seems to be a good step in the right direction - of course, it'll mean there will be a wait time again, until the initial problems are found out.
