New (Final?) Firmware released!

EXCITING! NEW FIRMWARE! 😛

Let's hope this one is a goody. Since there's no mention of RC in the title of this firmware, and this version is 201 (where RC5 was 150) I'm suspecting this might be a final release for the MK3. Too bad that Linear advance is still disabled, but in the end it can be worked around. 🙂

FIRMWARE 3.1.1 (FEBRUARY 5, 2018)

Changes in 3.1.1:

- Filament sensor is more reliable – higher FPS set and when runout is triggered one additional check is done
- Fail stats is split into last print and total menus. Crash detection is also split into X and Y axis
- Fan error will not prevent from continuing the print when using OctoPrint
- Print fan error or pause during rehoming will perform correctly now
- Preheat temperatures updated
- Temperature calibration now informs user about the conditions needed
- Better serial communication

Detailed description of changes:

Filament sensor reliability improvements
Filament sensor function was optimized, which leads to lower number of false detections.

Print reliability improved
Extruder resolution has been changed to 32 microsteps and stepper routine timing has been optimized.
This ensures that stepper movements are fluent even with high feedrates and printing over serial is reliable. Lower microstep resolution has no negative effect on print quality.
Linear advance feature is still disabled in current firmware version.
Users who saved parameters on previous firmware versions to EEPROM using M500 or by running PID calibration are informed on printer startup that default setting were loaded. This ensures that correct microstep resolution and extruder steps/mm will be used. If "Old settings found. Default PID, Esteps etc. will be set." message occurs on printer starup, it is recommended to re-run PID calibration or redo custom changes which were stored by M500 on previous firmware versions.

More detailed fail stats
In previous firmware versions, there was just one fail stats menu which contained statistics about power failures, filament runouts and detected crashes. We have split these statistics into "Last print" and "Total" menus.
We have also split detected crashes and now we have separate statistics for X and Y axis.

Fan error pauses print
If fan error occures when printing over serial line using Octoprint, print is paused using action commands ( http://docs.octoprint.org/en/master/features/action_commands.html ). This should be helpful in cases that fan is blocked by some obstacle and user can remove the obstacle and continue printing. In previous firmware versions connection between printer and Octoprint were lost during fan error and it was not possible to continue printing.

Long pause/print fan error improved
If long pause or print fan error occured during rehoming (for example during crash detection), there was wrong Z coordinate used when resuming paused print (or SD card print paused by fan error). This has been fixed and in current firmware version pause print is postponed until rehoming is finished.

- Menu options aligned with encoder clicks/positions
- Invalid unknown gcodes reported on serial
- Preheat temperatures updated
- Added temperature calibration warnings which inform user about all necessary conditions
- Firmware version check fix
- M600 unload current lowered to avoid damage of filament sensor

Yea, certainly wouldn't hope the PR team stops improving the FW, that would be quite of a short product life 😆

Been using this firmware since Friday. With crash detection turned on, I no longer have layer shifting. But I've had multiple prints ask for a Filament change, so I disabled the sensor.

I will stay on RC4 (143) until Linear Advance gets activated again - only uses SD card with FlashAir, no need for serial over USB.
I really like Linear Advance as I can print faster (same quality) and easier make profiles for other filaments like TPU/flex.

My filament sensor is saying that there's an error with the connection, post update. It worked fine before the update. I just changed the filament, used the auto load feature, ran a print, saw there was new firmware, updated, and now this.

Edit: Support said to check the wiring.... Disregarded the fact that I just used the auto load feature and ran a successful print before updating the firmware. Have had zero issues with the filament sensor before the latest firmware.

Edit 2: Reset the printer to factor settings and ran the wizard again. Now the filament sensor is responding but had to go through the entire calibration process all over again.

updated my mk3 today, got one print off, then i got bed leveling failed. when it does the autolevel sequence, the 3rd point, it fails. first 2 are fine. after that, i did xyz calibration again, it did all 4 points fine, then after the 2nd round of the 4 points, it said xyz calibration failed. never had any of these issues before. and also, the machine was not disturbed at all after the 1st successful print.

Edit: it did prompt me to reset my settings when updated, and i reran the pid tuning. it fails at the 3rd point of homing every time.

edit 2: my pinda probe wire was the culprit, after chatting with support, theres an issue inside of the pinda wiring somewhere. just moving the x axis side to side, the reading from the probe would go from triggered to open. just a coincidence that it happened just after flashing the newest firmware.

What problems are you having?

You need to remember that in a forum like this, you're mostly going to get people talking about things that go wrong, and relatively few people saying it worked. Most people wouldn't visit a forum to specifically say something worked for them. As another data point, it worked fine for me.

My opinion ... the printer CPU does not make it and will never make it?!

You have to remember that with every patch there will be bugs. I did a PID tuning and some other config changes which may have impacted the firmware which is why the all data clear / factory reset may have fixed it. I reported the bug to the devs but wanted to document my error here in the event that someone else had the same error.

when i updated my printer with new FW filament sensor turned itself off by itself... When i tried to turn it on again I've had same error, but it went away when i power-cycled printer. I did only two prints with new firmware and layer shift didn't happen yet... let's hope for the best...

I once asked a telephone operator to plug my terminal in to a 4 way adapter under her desk... she pulled a plug out to make space and plugged my equipment in... which was helpfull.

however the telephone system didn't last long with the power disconnected...

needless to say, the reported fault was not present after power was restored!

reboot is a powerful tool!

Rebooting the printer did not resolve the filament sensor detected message for me. I had to factory reset the printer.

When I have upgraded the firmware on my K8400 printer (which is based on Marlin) I have had to perform a reset (restore failsafe) which loads all default values into the correct memory locations in EPROM memory. I would guess in between software version changes, new memory locations might be used to store settings and a factory reset ensures all values are correct and in the right memory locations. Doesn't surprise me it also seems to be the cure here.

Absolute no problems with 3.1.1. over here.
The printer works fine so far, but I've also installed the new firmware for about 20 hours. Hopefully it will stay like that.

I made the mistake of starting an 11 hour print BEFORE upgrading and got my first layer shift. I will try again tonight with the new firmware.
