Re: My MK3 Power Mgmt Upgrade

hi josh, great write up. would you mind sharing your stl (or f3d) for the multimeter box? i know you said you knocked it together from other parts and models, but i think im going to get one as well, and it would be great if i could print one off myself. thanks!

Wow!
First time I've seen this thread. I'd also like to get the .stl for the dmm box.

Where did you actually store the PSU?

Thanks. Yeah, here you go. It's a 2-part print that I glued together.

A few notes...

- Print orientation isn't right in the STLs. You'll want to print the box with the open side facing up, and the frame clip laying on its left side (if looking from the front of printer).

- The inside measurements on the box are pretty tight on the multimeter I bought. You might want to print a small slice of the box to test on yours before you print the whole thing. You might need to adjust the model for a better fit.

- The small hole in the back is for inserting a screw driver to help push the multimeter out, if you need to remove it. Like I said though, it's a tight fit, so plan on it not coming out easily.

- The frame clip wasn't an exact fit on my frame. I think I remember having to slightly file down the inner 'teeth' inside the clip to get it to fit better.

- A nice upgrade would be to carve out an opening in the box that allows access to the screw terminals of the multimeter, with a removable cover to close it back up.

Where did you actually store the PSU?

I placed the PSU on top of a rubber mat, sitting on top of my vintage Coke machine (aka beer cooler) in my basement workshop, about 6 feet directly below the printer.

Re: My MK3 Power Mgmt Upgrade

great, thanks for the model! i would order the same one you shared in the link, so id probably just trust your model is accurate and would work fine.

since you posted the pic of the psu sitting on the fridge, just curious why you didnt attach it to the printer? i dont think i recall you saying anything about that in your original post, but admittedly i was reading pretty fast and may have missed that point. i know you used a different model, but the LRS 350 model has a few options on thingiverse for a mounting bracket to replace the stock one. im sure some exist for the one you used, or would have been easy for you to design your own instead of the box you ended up using. was there a particular reason why you wanted them so far apart?

The fan noise is the main reason I wanted to get the Meanwell further away. It's fairly loud. I was also concerned that the addition of a printed bracket to a PSU case would not end up being perfectly square and would skew the frame if attached like the original PSU was. I used jltx's frame brace instead, which measures perfectly square.

Re: My MK3 Power Mgmt Upgrade

from what iv read, at least for the LRS model, the noise seems to be ok. I think i was also reading someone was toying with the idea of adding a quiter fan on the OUTSIDE of the case since there wasnt enough room inside...? i dunno. i guess ill need to hear it in person first to decide if its acceptable.

thanks for posting your models. i had a look at them... just curious how you attached the frame clip to the multimeter box? there are no screw holes... did you just glue them together?

also, i was reading another thread and asked this, but so far no one has answered. they had printed the PSU mount in PETG. I was planning on using PLA as thats all I have to print with currently, though i know PETG has better thermal properties. just curious what you printed your parts in, and if you know if PETG is necessary? fwiw, iv also read people are noticing that these MW PSUs seem to only get warm to the touch, no hot... so its not like the PLA mount would be sitting on a realy hot surface. any thoughts here?

Glue. And I typically print all of my printer parts in PETG. You could get away with PLA on the multimeter box, but I'd use PETG for anything structural or mechanical (like a PSU bracket/brace).
