MK3 print resume bug
Hi,
Yesterday i was printing a 10 hour job, after about the 3 hours i started i was out of filament so i paused the print and replaced the filament.
After i resumed the print, it seems that the printer lost its z-axis position and it went too low and damaged the print, it tried several times going to the initial position than going to were it was before the pause but with a lower z -axis.
to be exact these are the steps i took before i pause so u can properly troubleshoot and fix the bug:
- pause print
- press the preheat for pla
- ==> setting ==> change the z-axis to a higher position
- unload the old filament
- load the new filament
- cleaned the head and then pressed resume
- the printer went directly to resume the print but on a lower z-axis
- after the head damaged the print and gut stuck it released it self after melting the print and going back to initial potion bottom left side.
- and it tried several times with same issue till i stopped the print
i managed to take a video before i stopped it it is big so it was uploaded to the below link:
kindly fix this bug ASAP.
note that the firmware version on the printer is the latest upgrade.
Best Regards
Z. N.
Re: MK3 print resume bug
I encountered something similar on the B143e firmware printing off SD card, I paused print and it lost the hot end temp, bed would keep heat setting but the hot end would not. I tried preheating during pause but as soon as I resumed the print, the temp on hot end went to zero setting.

Yes, exact same thing happening here. Has happened 3 out of 3 times I have paused and attempted to resume. Hotend set temp goes to zero. Preheat works as you say, but only til resuming print and hotend goes back to zero. Surprised that more people haven't reported this yet. B143 firmware here, and SD printing only.
Re: MK3 print resume bug
I had this happen to me several times. I noticed that sometimes the print will resume fine but more often than not it will fail to resume. usually by losing the print head temp. The bed temp stays. Anymore i am afraid to touch the print especially if it is hours into it. I am upgraded to RC5.
Re: MK3 print resume bug
Had the same scenario happen here.
Pausing a print would not re initiate correctly and ruined a print.
Fortunately for me it was a small test print after the build, I was hoping it was simply a hiccup in the new firmware, apparent,y it is still kicking around for more people.
Would love this one to be addressed, as now I am hesitant to pause a print.
For those that have had to resume "failed" print, are there any quick tips to recover manually correctly?
Generally, there is part of a layer already completed....
I have always just gone into the he .gcode, searched for last layer height, and re initiated the print from that point forward...
Is there a reference to perhaps do it quicker or better? Assuming we will need it in the future again?
Re: MK3 print resume bug
Yeah seems strange to me that this bug is still hanging around in the latest firmware. It's been present in every version I've tried since mid December. Seems like low hanging fruit, something that would be relatively easy to fix compared to the other issues they are dealing with.
Re: MK3 print resume bug
Just a tip, why are u pausing the print manually? The whole procedure of pausing, moving the head and such is automated with the M600 G-code command. And its the same command Prusa uses when issuing a color change with their simple color prints.
I don't really know where in the menu Prusa has nested the option. But in the normal Marlin this is during printing in the Tune menu and then Change Filament. So i would guess something similar here. (Still waiting on my mk3 😉 )
For the people printing from a Raspberry Pi, they can even just type in the M600 in the terminal and send the command directly.
Using this i never have an issue with resuming on the wrong hight, but doing it manually then even on my clone build printer with Marlin i have issues.

The only time I ever need to do it manually is if I see a print issue I need to fix really quickly, like a blob or a stray string dragging along the print or something. It happens in the moment and often I don't have a terminal readily accessible. Even if issuing a gcode command bypasses this firmware bug, not being able to pause a print job (and resume it) from the printer itself is kind of silly.
Re: MK3 print resume bug
Good point Josh. The way i described is more for when you want to do a planned filament change. Be it a color change, be it you see some problem with the filament like a tangle then you have time to react and use the way i do it.
Off course the pause and resume functions should just work, so if there is a bug there then that needs to be addressed.
Re: MK3 print resume bug
I was able to recover from this today. While the print was paused out of desperation I preheated and removed and loaded the filament. Resumed the printing and it is working. Reloading the filament, it is maintaining the hotend temp. One off so far. Will try the next time and post here.
10/18 hours into a Thanos gauntlet peice print.
Really like this MK2S
