MK3 louder than expected

Hi all.

One of the things I've heard about so much about is how quiet the MK3 is compared to the MK2 and also the little difference in sound between normal and stealth mode.

Mine is loud. I haven't had a MK2 to compare it to but it's louder than I expected.

I've put a towel under it but it's made little difference.

I have to run it in stealth mode because it's in my bedroom.

Z is loud when homing etc. X and Y are loud at different times. Mainly X.

I posted a video last week showing the noise. The noise is quieter in the video, which is annoying. Bear in mind, it's 5am.... I hadn't slept and had work in an hour. 🙄

Any ideas?

Is that some coming from the PSU?

Maybe you put the printer on a solid plate like Stone and test it again. This sound isn't normal. My one is amazing silent.

The noise in the video sounds exactly like the "PSU rattling" sound that I experienced as well. It has been discussed in other threads (not to be confused with "PSU clicking", which is different).

It sounds like the rattling I have in my MK3 PSU - It is a sheet of insulation plastic resonating at certain motor speeds.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

yeah, same here. Z is the worst, followed closely by Y.

Y:
-I packed my Y bearings full of moly di and it is 10x smoother. No idea how some people are getting by with a few drips of light oil, as recommended. Mine vibrated so much that you could visibly see the resonance in the extrusions.
Z:
-psu insulation sheet, as already mentioned. I had to tear down the psu and and anchor it properly.
*side note: was not really impressed with the build quality of the psu. Lots of cold joints and lots of joints were way underfilled. Spent half an hour going back over it, reflowing some joints and clipping some really long leads.
-smooth rods: mine chirp and honk. Will probably pack them with moly di as well.

Sounds like the screen is not securely tightened to the frame of the printer. To validate this, try pushing your screen tightly to the frame and see if the noise goes away. This happened to me and all I had to do was tighten the 4 screws.

Re: MK3 louder than expected

Just finished my build tonight, and I also have this issue. Noisy printer.

Now, it's not horrible. It's what I expected. But, MK3 was touted as being quieter than the MK2S and other printers on the market.

I thought it was the bearings and rods. When I first installed the various bearings they were noisy as they rode along the rods. They don't glide as I had anticipated. Now, I do have the latest hardened rods as they passed the magnet test.

I'll listen more closely during my prints tomorrow and see where the noise is originating. Could be the PSU, could be the bearings. Either way, it sounds basically the same as your video. (Unless you're trying to point out a particular noise in the video...not sure).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think it is all about comparison. those of us who are used to the Mk2S grinding away in the corner have been very pleasantly surprised by how much quieter Mk3 is. Not necessarily quiet - but quieter than the Mk2S by a huge amount.

RE: MK3 louder than expected

Hello,

I have the same vibrating sounds with MK3S. Even in stealth mode at certain times it vibrates like in your video.

Do someone have any possible solutions? I've tried removing, cleaning and lubricating the bearings, installed hard feet, put the printer on the concrete slab. My mk3s came with black PSU which shouldnt vibrate as I understand but the sounds seems to get noisier at Y axis moves.

There was no vibration at first. It appeared just a few days ago. A headache. Printer is about one month old.

I would really appreciate some help pals:)

Speed? Prusa can go with speeds of 200, of course you have noise at those speed.

0.2 layer high quality, here is the speed 80 for infill(much better), if you take 0.2 speed you get 200 or 180(noise).

Then take a good look at the table, is this stable or moves it around, or does the table  echo the noise in the room. My table I fixt to the wall so it does not move.

Put the printer for a test on the floor!

Latest firmware installed?

I've tried printing with both stock Prusa settings 0,2 quality and 0,2 speed. I still get those big sounds while printing max at 80mm/s.
I see that when the perimeter is being printer at faster speed it gives more noise. But I assume that noise is coming from the Y axis solely. My table is stable with concrete block on it.
Yesterday I read somewhere in the forums that sound may come from the stepper motors and because the Y axis motor is directly touching the backplate it can give huge vibrations and sounds at certain speeds?

Maybe this is the case for the sound? Have someone tried printing different Y axis motor bracket?

Adding the video of the sounds I encoutered yesterday:
