Mk3 LCD display appears to be dead?

Does anyone know if the Reprap style LCD panels like this:

https://www.amazon.com/REPRAPGURU-Display-Controller-Adapter-Printer/dp/B015NDAKE4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1520809965&sr=8-2&keywords=2004+LCD+Display+3D+Printer+Controller+With+Adapter+For+RAMPS+1.4+Reprap+Mendel&dpID=41jH-TmKGmL&preST=_SX342_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Would work as a replacement on a mk3?

Why do you think the display is dead? Has there been a lightning strike or another powerful electric shock? Could it be a defective cable or a bad connector.
When and how did the problem arise?
If you are buying a spare part, you should buy it at Prusa Webshop. Then you know it will fit your printer.

Prusa displays have 90degree connectors where as other displays have straight connectors. And i believe there is an issue with connector polarity.

I would first think this would be a warranty issue unless you already know better. The unit you pictured would require a few modifications to work such as replacement or resoldering of the contrast trim potentiometer. It doesn't fit correctly within the Original Prusa case. Joan is also correct in that the cables are opposite in terms of the keys on the display and would need to be forced in or removed and adjusted. At the end of the day, it would work if you are electronically handy , but personally, I would recommend talking to Prusa customer service via the chat and seeing what they can do for you if nothing else perhaps offer a break on shipping if you know the covered part was damaged in a way which would not be warranted.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the adjustment dial post is longer and the quality is notably different, however completely functional if you are willing to make the changes. I would say fine for a spare or if you are not fussy, but the original is best. There may be other alternatives but its a crap shoot how it will fit and work in the end.

Display is garbled, printer still works fine if I run it with Pronterface on my laptop. I can hold in on the encoder and activate the manual Z lift even though I can't read the display. Spent a while in chat with support, they think it was zapped with a static shock. I don't remember getting shocked but it is that time of year here so it's possible. I had just finished a print, the display was fine when I walked up to the machine, when I replaced the sheet on the heat bed the display was kaput. Support had me remove and re-plug the cables and then remove and swap them end for end. Made no difference. Display looks like the other thread on here where static killed it so I have to assume that's what happened. Support offered to extend free shipping for the part but I'm just cringing at spending $50 for an LCD panel on a week old printer. Stuff happens though! I'm really surprised it died so easily considering that the panel is inside a plastic cover. Support suggested that I should always touch the power supply case when approaching the printer. Maybe that's common knowledge among 3D printer folks but this is my first so I'm learning!

I found a different controller that has straight plugs like the Prusa, and after more reading folks are reporting that the connectors are flipped over. Just needs a notch cut in for the plugs to fit. I'll see if I can verify the pinouts when it gets here.

Joan, in the Prusa assembly manual they showed two different types of controllers, one with angled plugs and one with straight plugs. They said the two (Prusa branded) boards are interchangeable. Boards from other vendors might be different. Mine came with straight plugs. I think you were an early adopter, maybe yours came with the angle plugs?

I've been messing with Arduinos for a little while and I've used the 2004 style LCD's in a couple projects. I even had a spare here that I piggybacked on this one. It read the same jibberish so I think it must be in the board behind. The linear regulator is still showing 3.3v and I'm able to read the SD card from Pronterface.

devdoc, thanks for the tip on the trim pot. I'll probably need to mod the case anyway. I need to research how to shield this thing from static if it's that sensitive. I don't want to do this again, I was having too much fun making things! lol

Another option is ro unsilder tge display and solder another in its place

Regards Joan...

Yes I adopted a mk1 prusa years ago.... updated it twice. Have a third and fourth update paid for.. and i ordered a mk3 early too

Re: Mk3 LCD display appears to be dead?

In case somebody comes across this thread in the future, the panel I bought off Amazon (different than the one I originally posted) :

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010ABLQTM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Plugged in with no problem. I did not need to modify or change the plugs in any way. As devdoc noted, the pot for contrast on the back is larger and interferes with the mounting bracket on the left side. I'm going to just mill a notch into the bracket for the time being. Otherwise, the original front cover and even the knob fit back on. I will note that the encoder does not have the same "feel" to it when turned but it functions fine, it clicks but not as firm. And I noticed that the reset button is a little shorter. But at least it's working so I can mess with the live Z and change out filaments and so forth.

But you can be sure I wil be grounding myself to the power supply every time I walk up to the printer though! 😯

This is the offending potentiometer on the back side:

In the photos, the replacement looks much smaller...Is it? Or is that just a perspective thing?

Just a perspective thing. It’s the same size as the original and uses the same mounting holes.

Hmm, so apparently just grounding myself to the PSU as suggested by Prusa support chat is not quite enough? I ran my first job today since replacing the LCD control and when I touched the power supply I did in fact get a static shock and then the screen displayed some unusual characters. Difference this time is that it reverted back to the info display when it refreshed. I guess I need to touch a metal appliance in the kitchen or maybe a screw on a light switch first?

Re: Mk3 LCD display appears to be dead?

Hi,

For whoever it might be usefull, those led displays are a bit sensitive to static electricity. My printer was in a setup were I would (involuntarily) build-up static electricity when reaching it. Almost everytime, I sent a static discharge when approaching the display with my fingers. I knew that was bad and I was telling myself that one of these days I would zap something on the printer. It did occur finally that the display suffered static injury, but was still working somewhat. Now it is dead for real, and I am happy that I found this thread for a link to a replacement.

I changed my setup not to build-up static electricity anymore and ordered one of those replacement display unit.

Thanks,

JL

Re: Mk3 LCD display appears to be dead?

I made it a habit to touch a metal screw on the light switch cover plate on the wall near the printer before I touched the printer after the first LCD died. Haven't had a problem since. Odd, but I've used a couple similar LCD displays in Arduino projects and never had an issue with dead or corrupted displays with those. My office chair appears to be the culprit in my case, I have a static charge every time I stand up from it. It's not so bad during the summer but in the winter time- look out!
