MK3 Extruder Motor getting hot
Hi guys,
This is my second day with the Prusa i3 mk3. I gotta say it works wonders, it's silent and the print quality is amazing.
I just noticed that the extruder motor is getting quite hot even during small 30 minute prints.
I don't have anything that can measure exactly the temperature, but it's hotter than the heated bed but not enough to burn my fingers.
Is it normal? If not, how can I address this issue. Just a reminder, I haven't noticed any problems on my printed parts.

I think I found the answer on this post, but mine gets to same temperature except it gets hot like that after a 30 min print.
Post - "The extruder stepper motor gets very hot after ~2 hours of constant printing. I cannot touch the metal cover for more than ~5 seconds and then it hurts badly in my fingers. Is this temperature "normal"( I know we all have different level of resisting pain 🙂 ) for your stepper motor?"
From Josef Prusa - "I posted a picture from thermal cam somewhere here on the forum. It is around 70°C, which is completely fine for the motor and won't hurt it's performance 🙂

Hola tengo problemas con el extrusor en una mk3 se calienta mucho es normal o hay que regular menos corriente a los drivers?

This question has been asked and answered several times. Normal operating temperature of the extruder motor is in the 50 - 60 degrees centigrade range. The motor can operate without issue up to 100 degrees C. Source: Jo Prusa.

The problem with hot extruder steppers are not malfunctions because they get hot (although they behave wonky above 65 degrees), but because they transmit the heat over the shaft onto the filament string.
Meaning PLA will get mushy very fast if you have a print with more than a couple of retractions. If you don't print away that warm and mushy filament very fast, you are going to have a problem.
Print failures are guaranteed with hot extruder motors.
Things like this can not be printed with steppers that go above 55 degrees celsius.

I could only print it when i added a 40mm fan that blasted onto the motor.
PETG and ABS will have no problem with hot motors, but PLA will never forgive you.

Pero tengo una impresora de menos de la mitad de precio una A6 y no calieta el extrusor esto parece una falla de diseño.
Se le podra poner aigun disipador?

No lo muestra yo también utilizo ese software y tengo el mismo problema al no saber cuanto tiempo tardan las cosas,lo que hago es utilizar cura y trato de poner los mismo datos que en el slic3r o lo más cerca que se pueda y así me doy una idea de cuanto tiempo tardarán

Yo hice la misma pregunta y me respondieron lo mismo que era normal,yo también tengo una anet 8 e igual no se calienta de esa forma

Hi, I recently notice this problem too, after failed all of 2 hours+ print job with PLA.
Does anyone found the solution of this problem yet?

👿 hello.... I have been using prusa control and have had kit done for a week, have had mixed results with prints finishing. I have been experiencing my filament not being able to un extrude completely cause of a bulge at the tip of filament. My larger print have failed at the same area after 3 attempts. I noticed my extruder motor was very hot when I caught the last fail, which the nozzle was jammed. 1 failure before this one was an over night print of the same thing. It seemed to push the jam out and continued the print fine(still probably not salvageable). I wonder if the extruder motor is causing this problem after a similar amount of time. Both times failed around 4 hours into print. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I see people viewing pictures, any thoughts on the issue. It's my second printer, always figured out the problems on my monoprice i3. But the hotend isn't this complicated. I built the mk3 kit, everything was perfect after wizard check. My belt tension is X:265 and y is 296.. I think y is high but don't think that would effect e motor. Ok, back to fiddling peace!👌🤟🤔

The extruder getting hot issue has been corrected with the latest test release firmware, 3.2.0-RC2.

Referencing DevilHunter's adding a 40mm fan- how did you do it? My son and I are having problems with the extruder gear getting warm enough during a long print that the PLA is getting soft and hard for it to keep moving, leading to it not extruding in the late parts of the print. We would be interested in seeing a picture or any details about how you were able to mount another fan so that it blew into the extruder gear area. Thanks a bunch!

No puedo imprimir en PLA cosas muy elaboradas ya que se atasca el filamento, a la altura del disipador, mi teoria es que es culpa del ventilador, pero este funciona correctamente. Como has solucionado el problema? Has agregado otro ventilador para el motor o has cambiado el noctua de 5V por otro mas potente?
