Re: Layer shifting

I have tried this latest 198, the original 150 and the previous 143 firmwares, but the printer is still not usable. 🙁

Sometimes the printing is great, but the layer shifting is present most of the times.

That is really weird. I have FW 150 on my kit and many +12h prints with NO layer shift so far. Also fail statistics is clear as f*ck with Crash detection [ON] while printing.

I think you must have mechanical problem. Did you follow the manual step by step? Do you have your belt on Y-axis idler in the center of bearing housing? Does your HB on Y-axis move smoothly? Does your rods on Y-axis in parallel? Are you really sure with that?

Re: Layer shifting

So my issue is resolved!

The issue was the loose worm screw on the y-axis pulley. It was not tightened very good and became loose after some time. I just tightened it really good and the printer works like a charm again. 🙂

I think the same problem might be with the x-axis shifting, so please double check your pulley screws and be sure there is some space between pulley and the motor.

Re: Layer shifting

So I decided to give out the new firmware a try to see if it fixed my layer shifting problems. I flashed firmware version 3.1.1-198 onto my printer and started a print. Everything was going good until about halfway through the print. I started to get layer shifts that were not detected by the crash detection. The layer shift always seems to happen at the end of a non-extrude move. I had to bump the print head myself to get it to detect a crash and re-home. I have attached pictures that show the shifts.

I have not had a successful print with my printer with any firmware above version 137. I am forced to go back to version 137 as I have never had a failed print with it and it has working linear acceleration.

Some info:
Firmware: 198
Crash Detection: on
Filament sensor: off
Operating mode: normal
Printing via RPi3 USB Octoprint

Re: Layer shifting

Hey,
had my first 2 Layer shifts. Crash detection detected something and rehomed but continued with a layer shift. Both times on the same model but not the same hight.

Newest Firmware so 3.1.1
PET 235° 0,15 Layers
Printed PET many times bevor with no problem.

Anyone got any idea what to check?

3.1.1 here. Crash detection disabled. Printing a full set of Mk3 extruder components currently via Octopi. No layer shifts.

With crash detection on I was getting shifts every print. For me it is staying off.

Re: Layer shifting

Yea i just turned Crash detection off and reprinted the same gCode as bevor 2 times without a problem.

Anyone knows what crash detection is actually doing? is it falsely triggering and then rehoming incorretly (maybe because of some mechanical problems?)
Is the printer just "stronger" without crash detection and just forcing over small bumps curlups or infill that would otherwise trigger crash detection?

i am happy that i got the 2 prints out i needed and the MK3 is going perfectly for me otherwise. But this Layer shift thing kind of boggles my mind... ❓

I have turned off crash detection with no affect on my print. I get a layer shift at the same exact spot every time. How tight do you have your belts? I have mine the same tightness that I have them on my MK2S but I still get layer shifts on every print!

Re: Layer shifting

To the people that saw the layer shifts...

Did the printer re-home and started printing in the wrong coordinates causing a layer shift??

From my understanding the problem is that the Crash Detection is detecting a crash that doesnt exist and when it re-homes starts printing in the wrong location causing the layers to shift....

The layer shits happen for me at the end of a travel move. This is with crash detection on or off, it doesn't change. The printer does not attempt to re-home unless I grab the x-carriage and cause a crash myself.

Also, the layer shift seem to happen at the same spot in the G-code every time but if I downgrade my firmware to version b137 I never have a layer shift ever. This seems to point to the fact that it is a firmware problem.

Was that in the last stable firmware (3.1.1)?

Could you share that gcode so we could take a look??

Re: Layer shifting

For me the layer shifting was happening when it detected a non existing crash and rehomed. So I think there are two problems here:-

  • Detecting none existing crashes
  • Rehoming does not give a consistant result
  • Like so many others I have turned of crash detection for now. Hopefully I can now print the join blocks I need for my enclosure.

Yes this happened on the latest stable firmware 3.1.1. I have attached the g-code file that has a layer shift right above the Marvin's eyes. Don't mind how messy the infill is inside, I did this to try to increase the chance of a layer shift.

Also on a related note, if I downgrade to firmware version b137 I am able to print with travel moves set at 250mm/s with no problem at all. As soon as I update past that firmware I have constant layer shifts even with the travel speeds reduced to 200mm/s

I've also had some problems, the same file produces either a shifted benchy when the crash detection is on, and when i turn it off it works flawlessly without problem. I upgraded to the latest firmware (the on released february the fifth) and it worked a little better but shifts still occur with detection on.

    Here is the file.

And also here with the latest 3.1.1. (I believe 201). Just bought it ad now at an height of about 22 mm also a layer shift. It was minimal here.. about 0.1 mm and not 1 mm like most others..
