Layer shift 40 hours into a 45 hour print

I was printing a large lithophane cylinder at .1 layer height. It had really been looking good every time I checked on it over a day and a half. Took it off the printer this evening and there was a 1 mm layer shift in the y axis. The rest of the lithophane looks awesome, except for the big ugly line running through the upper part of it.

I had a similar shift last week when I printed a baby groot. 1 mm in the y axis.

Came here to research the issue and saw the latest firmware. I've flashed it and I'll kick off the 45 hour print again. Hope it works this time. I have been so impressed with the Mk3 since I got it in January, but if it's going to layer shift at random times, that'll be a problem.

With the shift that small, it probably wasn't actually a layer shift. It's likely crash detection was triggered and it rehomed your X and Y axis and continued the print. Due to the inaccuracy of this rehoming process, you see it as a layer shift. Latest firmware intends to help with this, but you may want to check why the crash detection was triggered (friction, etc).

This is why I roll with crash detection and filament sensor off. They are great features, but I find they are only adding additional failure points to my process. If you're prudent, you won't need either of them.

1mm is pretty big on my scale. a 0.1mm shift after re-home would be unacceptable to me. 0.010mm would be ok.

@Brigandier That's a good idea - I think I will turn crash detection off if this latest reprint has a problem. I already turned off filament detection because it was pausing the print for false positives. As @eric.k4 mentioned, 1 mm can be a huge shift, depending on what you're printing. Even a .01 shift would probably ruin a lithophane.
