Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
Hello,
Although I do have a functional Lack table based setup at the moment, I am looking at upgrading this a bit. The problem seems to be to find a closet deep enough to fit the printer and complete movement range (front to back) of the bed, The only Ikea part that seems to fit is the Stuva kids sleeping room closet, but thats only 50 deep and might be borderline too small. Has anybody tried this particular closet already . Even MK2 owners..
At the same time I was looking at second hand server racks, but they all seem not deep enough either. Most end at 54 cm deep
Any other ideas would be highly appreciated. Money is not a real issue, but I want to remain sensible, its a hobby after all.
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
You could use a 40 and 20 cm besta cabinet together.
I nearly bought that yesterday.
But I saw just in Time at IKEA that it is not made of wood but mainly paper.
So I was not willing to spend 80€ on a card board box.
The stuva is made of the same crap as is the lack
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
I am not expecting better quality furniture, its Ikea after all 🙂
My whole home office/computer area is Besta made. So you suggest to interconnect a 40 cm with a 20 cm enclosure eh.... That might just work.
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
i have a Stuva/ Besta Mix as an enclosure:
I got it from a thread in the improvment section of the forum, which one i cant remember.
it is build from:
BESTÅ 990.476.35 & 802.612.58
SINDVIK 902.918.58
STUVA 301.281.77
But you have to make a cutout in the back for the heatbed cables.
I drilled 4 holes from the top part to the main enclosure, so i can keep 4 Spools ready for the printer. I also but some Silica gel in the top part to keep the Spools dry.
I was planning on the MMu for my MK2 but bought an MK3 instead.
i also added two linear slide outs so i can get the printer out without lifting it.
EDIT: with the MK3 it does not fit with Display on the front ! 🙄

Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
Thanks Maximillian, I had my brother measure his MK2, and that fits barely (needing the cut out in the back) .
On FB I had somebody suggest using a Metod kitchen cabinet (which is 60 cm deep) and fit that with a glassvik glass door
That is probably what I am going to do.
I do love your sliding rail idea though,

I do love your sliding rail idea though,
just rember to fix the cabinet to the wall.... 😯
EDIT: do you have a link / number for the metod cabinet ?
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
I used the Stuva\Besta one as well. I took the LCD panel off the front and had it separate to fit my mk2 in without cutting out the back.
Now looking to fit my mk3 into it but I want to have a bed mounted camera on as well for better timelapse vids so I was thinking of taking the standard back off and gluing in a frame to extend the depth of the cabinet. That way I can still have it sealed and also to whatever depth I need.

Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
For what it's worth if you are OK with a little DIY why not make your own from Aluminium extrusion ?
I'm not sure what country you're in but you could take a look at this stuff.
https://www.aluminiumwarehouse.co.uk/easyfix
It has aluminium square section, corner pieces that just push into that section and even hinges, the great part is that you buy the length and send a cutting list and it all comes ready cut. If you recess some Neodymium magnets into the plastic connectors before inserting it is a doddle to get acrylic to stick to the outside. They even have a profile so you could drop a lid into the top.
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
Thanks !
if you planning on getting the MMU would go with the metod cabinet, as you have more room above the printer
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
Cancelled my order for the MMU. Dont see a real use for it (I am from the B&W TV time....) except maybe for soluable support
Might still add it in the future and yes I am still not sure if I will got the Metod way (80 CM high, so soom for anything on top)
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
As a swede, reading english text propped full of Ikea product names becomes linguistically confusing fast. 😀

For some reason the US model of the STUVA is 201.286.20, the rest of the model numbers work though.
Sad about the display, that's almost a perfect setup! 🙁

That is not the right Cabinet ! it is only 34 cm deep! i cant find the 60x50x64 on the US site

I would use the MMu mainly for support just like you, but reading about the issues and loosing print quality has kept me from buying it.
And the most time i print parts for prototypes and stuff so i don't care about color...
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
Here is my setup
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
And you need that big 120mm fan. Otherwise the enclosure temperature keeps on rising and you'll get clogs after more than one hour of printing.
Been there, done that. With the big fan I manage to keep the enclosure to a constant 23C, and it's a lot less noisy than the small one that's in the orange filter housing (currently disconnected).
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
Not being a Ikea guru, which cabinet is that ?
Re: Ikea Stuva or alternatives (not Lack) as enclosure
STUVA frame 301.281.77
SINDVIK glass door 902.918.58
BESTÅ soft closing/push-open hinge 802.612.58
LAPPVIKEN door 502.916.76
It's based on this:
https://github.com/PrusaMK2Users/MK2_Tips_and_Tricks/wiki/IKEA-LACK-STUVA-enclosure
The part on the side of the enclosure that guides the filament is something I designed myself.
You'll have to put the printer sideways or the heat bed cables hit the back.
Then again, sideways was easier for MMU filament feeding too.
The fan and the led strip are driven by 12V power from the Prusa PSU, but they are switched using a relay that's controlled via an OctoPrint plugin.
