Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

How did you get that? Yours shipped the same day mine did, back in Feb. Do tell how you were able to get a powder coated PEI sheet?

I hauled my finely tuned Mk3 300 miles to a show (MRRP2018). I returned from a round about the show to find it beside my printer in use by the guy sharing a table with me as a mousepad.

Apparently some dude named Josef left it there for me.

I just tried to print a benchy at 0.05mm layers. I cooled the temp down to. 200c from 215c. I was getting your extruder clicking BAD.
Brought the temp up in 5c increments. Almost gone at 210c, gone at 215c.

So it's got something to do with pressure. Not saying it's about feed rate, cause that's low. Cancelled print, and running at 0.15 layer height. (New custom firmware built tonight)

Hi, I'm Sean. I used to work on CNC machines.
I try to not make mistakes, but the decision is YOURS.
Please feel free to donate to my filament/maintance fund.

Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

Someone mentioned they were using Slic3r... as a new Prusa Mk3 owner I recently downloaded 1.41.1+ of Slic3r Prusa edition and was just idly looking at the Printer Settings tab and noticed that in the Extruder 1 tab the minimum Layer height limit is set at 0.070 mm.
I don't know how Slic3r uses that value... but if you're setting your layer height to .05 mm and that conflicts with the Extruder 1 limit in the Printer Settings configuration, perhaps no good can come of it.

Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

Bumping this thread as I have the same question. Any tips would be appreciated.

Me too.

I have the same problem with Prusament PLA mystic brown. I can print perfectly fine at 0.2, 0.15 and 0.1. But as soon as I go to 0.05, the extruder clogs pretty fast. It doesn't matter if I slice on my own, or use the 0.05 mm treefrog on the supplied SD card. The first layer is usually perfect (as it is thicker), the problems will start in the 2. or 3. layer.

This is totally reproduceable. I never get clogs with my filaments, but when I go to 0.05, I always get clogs.

It was mentioned that it happens with the silver filament, but other filaments are fine. My silver filament from prusa contains small particles for the optical effect, so does the mystic brown.

Maybe these small particles do something weired inside the extruder when they are extruded too slow?

I'm on firmware 3.5.1 and Slic3r 1.42-alpha3 and using all standard settings.

Problem has been confirmed in this thread:

Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

my 2 cents:
Printing with 0.05 layer height brings two issues you have to fight:
1. Heat creep: Plastic is flowing much slower:
-> Possible solutions: Increasing the print speed, reducing/deactivate retractions, providing cool air to the extruder
2. Higher back pressure: Less error tolerance
-> Possible solutions: reducing the flow rate

Hope that helps to understand "Why"

1. Heat creep: Plastic is flowing much slower:

But this doesn't explain why we only have problems with filled PLA and not with unfilled PLA.

2. Higher back pressure: Less error tolerance
-> Possible solutions: reducing the flow rate

The problem only occurs when the flow rate is low. As soon as the flowrate is increased, the problem is gone. So this solution unfortunately goes in the wrong direction.

What is filled and unfilled PLA?
Both things are going hand in hand. If you're reducing a flow rate, you're reducing the amount of the filament pushed through the nozzle over time.
So the usual approach is to try the #1 solutions and then try to make it look nice and still printable with #2.

Filled PLA contains particles, that produce some special effects, like the colour change on the Prusament Mystic Brown. They aren't visible to the naked eye, but you can see them under the microscope. Unfortunately, Prusa doesn't label which PLAs are filled and which are pure PLA

Thanks for explanation. Yes, that explains. Most brands are usually providing a recommendation not going lower then 0.1, 0.15 with such a filament. Last time I've seen a carbon filled PETG with recommendation not lower then 0.2.

I think it's because this additional particles are not even distributed throughout a filament. And they're maybe also causing better heat distribution. But this is just a pure guess.

Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

perhaps it's a bit like tea leaves blocking the plughole, the particles in the base material are restricted by the narrow exit between the nozzle and the print, and clump together blocking the gap...
