Help with 0.05 mm layer height

I recently got a mk3 as my first 3d printer and I ran some tests using a benchy with the layer height profiles provided in Slic3r. The 0.2 mm and 0.15 mm prints turned out just fine; the 0.1 mm had some stringing and rough places on the hull and the 0.05 mm had a lot of stringing, the entire hull was rough, and there were some bridging issues. Attached pictures are of the 0.05 mm print

Based on what I had read I guessed that cooling was the problem. I've run additional tests with a cooler print temps (210 - 190 C in steps of 5) and with slower print speeds (halved the speed on the Perimeters, Small perimeters, and External perimeters settings) with all other settings left as the defaults but I haven't seen any improvement. I'm too new to 3d printing to know where to look next.

Any ideas on what I can do to improve the low layer height prints? Or at least something to point me in the right direction?

Well this isn't exactly a helpful reply, but I just so happened to have just printed a benchy with the exact same settings, and I had the same result as you. So it's not some issue with just your printer.

There's a lot of odd little defects, so I'm really not sure where to even start with determining the cause.

I was gonna start with adjusting retraction settings, but I really don't know if that's gonna be helpful.

Bumping this thread as I have the same question. Any tips would be appreciated.

Did you upgrade your firmware? There was an issue with extruding 0.05 mm layers.
Also, there's a pre-sliced 50 um treefrog on the SD card.

Yes, I’m running 3_1_3. My results at .1 and .05 look much like his picture above. .15 and .20 look really good.

I’m interested to see if anyone has advice on how to fix this as well. I’m getting beautiful prints at .15 & .2, but at .1 and .05 mine look terrible. It also occurs when using the prusa gcode files that came on the sd card. I’m running the latest firmware and it happens with every material I’ve tried.

I'm running the 3.1.3 firmware and using Slic3r 1.39.1. I did try printing a tree frog, not the pre-sliced one, at 0.05 mm. It didn't have any of the stringing problems the benchy had but it did have some rough spots on the front overhang and on the back of the front legs.

Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

I have been running into problems with .05mm height too. Every time we try the treefrog with the Prusa Silver filament, it skips/clogs leaving holes. We have tried raising the temp, no retraction, even the presliced on SD card. We have tried cleaning nozzle etc. The silver usually works with no problems at .10 or greater height.

However we have had successful .05 mm treefrog prints with other filaments (XYZware PLA). Right now I am running a .05mm treefrog with another filament (Breathe-3dP PLA++) to see if that helps.

Anyone else specifically running into problems printing with Prusa Silver at 0.05mm or advice on how to fix it?

Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

I just finished two of the same print, they were both 30 small parts on the print bed and approximately 7 hour prints. They printed Flawless at 0.05 mm layer height on my 0.25 mm nozzle.

I am running a custom 3.2 firmware with linear Advanced enable.

PS: I print with a Pi 3

I just finished another benchy with the extrusion multiplier set to 0.95. It's still not as good as the ones printed at higher layer heights but it is a significant improvement over any previous 0.05 mm attempts. I'm going to try bumping the multiplier down to 0.9 to see if that makes it any better.

I remember I once measured the diameter of the Prusa silver PLA because I was fiddling with the extrusion multiplier and found some variance. Maybe try to measure the diameter? Although, to do this properly, you almost need a micrometer... If the diameter is incorrect or varies, you'll have over- or underextrusion.

Use this. It's much easier and more accurate.

Thanks sean.h8 I'll give it a try soon. (No handy micrometer Martin thanks for the suggestion though)

Until then, here are some images/details:

I can't ever get treefrog to print in Prusa Silver (Most of which I stopped before they finished seeing how bad. SO many more headless frogs than pictured)
But I have printed 3 other PLAs, none had major problems (sorry I only have an image of the white)

You can see, at the smoke stack the Benchy fail, again the white PLA did fine

Other symptoms: Extruder clicks, signalling the clogs.

Using 3.1.3RC FW (My understanding is RC is same as final so I didn't bother upgrade this time)
The Prusa Silver is the roll that came with the printer (kit)
The other filaments I have used (only PLA) are XYZware (several colors), and the white pictured is Breathe-3DP

Here is what I have tried so far over the last several days (as best I can remember in order)

  • Various nozzle cleans between prints (cold pulls, acupuncture needle, filament load/unloads sequences etc)

  • Default SD card slices, PrusaControl, and Slic3r PE

  • Raising the temp with Prusa Silver in increments (up to 230)

  • Finally today a thorough adjustment of the filament gear system to make sure everything was aligned/ set screw tight/ and tested various tension settings
  • I ran the vase from the SD card last night (.200 layers) in silver, no problems anywhere.
Whistles I ran today (.2) after adjusting the gears came out clean.

I guess I am scratching my head why the Prusa Silver is being so difficult at < .1 while every other PLA I try, is fine (and silver works too at >.1), and if this could explain some of other's problems.

    Thanks again everyone

Try 0.92... I just find that number magical... 😉

EDIT1: If I wake up when my print finishes in ~4 hours, I'll print a 50micron frog. I've got some old moist trash filament on the printer right now, just printing a massive thing, just to see what it will "look" like when it's done.

EDIT2: ohhhh mannn... I just noticed, I printed the object I'm printing backwards to assist with cooling, but I have the seam position in the back.... Gonna go straight down the "Front" of the actual object... 🙁

I tried it at .9 and it actually turned out really good. There were still a few rough parts and some stringing so I'm going to try tweaking the retraction settings to see if that clears up the last few problems.

Re: Help with 0.05 mm layer height

Still no luck with the Prusa Silver at .05mm
Today I used the Extrusion Test : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1622868
at .2mm- 95% extrusion went perfectly
    Then tried it at .005->
No luck at various flow rates, played with temps, and even slowed it down.
I still have extruder clicking and clogs.
Any other thoughts or suggestions, or should I just give up on the Prusa Silver at low layer heights (at least until new firm ware)
    Thanks, again.

I printed the frog last night with some super cheap PLA at 0.05mm, printed perfect. (Straight off the SD card, no tweaks at all, not even extrusion multiplier) Still got more of that junk than I know what to do with... lol.

I'll try the Prusa Silver. I thought it printed better than this junk... but I have 2 URGENT prints I need to do. (water/feed for hatched baby chickens... lol... too cheap to go to the store)

I may get it started tonight, I may not... Tomorrow afternoon, I've got a ~12hr print lined up, so I may not get it on the printer for a bit. (proving the awesomeness of my printer, and strutting, is fun and all, but it don't help pay for filament. :p (I really should make a tip-jar kind of thing... hahah)

I will say My ESUN PLA PRO printed *BETTER* than the Prusa Silver.

Here is the 0.05mm layer frog, with a 0.4mm nozzle. STL that came with printer, zero tweaks.

Thanks, I appreciate it, No rush.

One more detail for anyone else if it helps: the roll of the silver is dated Feb. 8, 2018.

I Spent all morning disassembling/reassembling hot-end because a clog broke off in the PTFE tube just above the nozzle. 😡

But other than this one hiccup, have really been enjoying MK3 these last three weeks!
