Greasing of bondtech gears and needle bearing vs. build manual

Hi there,

the manual for the MK3 does not talk about applying any grease to the bondtech gears or the needle bearing inside the secondary bondtech gear.

But people talk about that this would be a wise idea.

So I searched bondtech.se for advice or confirmation and yes, there it is. See this official manual https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7A1MEUY39HCaXdjcF9DYzdYcXM/view

In this document under "maintenance": After cleaning apply
some grease or some teflon based oil inside the needle bearing of the secondary drive wheel
and also on the gear’s teeth.

So I guess the build manual should be updated! @jakub.d are you aware of this?

Best regards everyone!

I guess I'm old school in that I was always taught friction surfaces get lubrication... I put a bit of grease on mine subconsciously...

What sort of grease for such a small part? I was thinking something more like light oil.

I agree with the poster above, grease should always go on friction surfaces. My bondtech gears started to show a tad bit of wear. I contacted support and they recommended ptfe or white lithium grease.

Do not go crazy when apply the grease, you don't want to get it on your filament or in your hot end.

You just posted this as I posted my reply 😀

Do not use light machine oil because it may travel onto your filament and end up in your hit end. Use ptfe or white lithium grease, per the chat I had with Prusa support.

Thats a good point.. And especially important as my kit has been shipped 2 Bondtek parts with the hole in and told to remove the screw.. So I have a clear path for oil to leak out...

I have a can of spray white Lithium grease.. I think I am going to spray a bit of that into a container and use a fine point to apply it accurately.

I smeared a bit of superlube on mine... It was a bit messier than I hoped, a very little goes a long way on such small parts, so I had to spend a bit of time wiping the extruder area off afterward. Definitely want something tacky in that area for sure.

Never Seize. A little dab will do you...and 4 or 5 other people.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to bring this back to light, because I think it's responsible for a bit of our uneven extrusion issues. I had my extruder side flipped up today, and noticed a lot of metal shavings from where my Prusa Professional Assembly™ didn't put any grease on this. I hit it with a little lithium grease on the gear teeth, and can see a bit of improvement.
