First prints from a happy Newbie - tweaking advice?

My son and I (mostly him) finished our kit and completed our first test prints with no big problems. We are first time 3D printers (except for a couple frustrating weeks with a Tiko which was just enough to peak our interest).

We did have a problems with the z-axis check during the self check. The nozzle was driving into the bed no matter how we had the PINDA probe set. (check program didn't seem to time out or sense the blockage, just drove the axis continually!). Finally pulled the PINDA probe out just to look at it, reinstalled and then noticed that the top of the probe has a red LED that I sure don't remember seeing before - and now is seems to be working fine. Don't know for sure, but seems like we had a bad connection or poor wiring joint inside the probe?

Here are our first two test prints. Some smudging at the nozzle exit points on the top of the logo and slight roughness along Benchy's bow.
Any tips on tweaking for this???

Thanks.

Glad to hear you two had such good success. I've got 33 days before my MK3 ships and it's nice to hear about successes. Keep an eye on the wiring on your PINDA probe and light. I hope it doesn't give you any problems in the future.

The roughness on the bow of benchy is probably a lack of cooling. Either rotate the benchy in the slicer first, so the bow faces forward head on towards the part cooling fan, or increase the cooling fan speed. Each layer needs to be cooled before it droops, especially on overhangs.

I have seen others redesign the MK3 cooling fan duct to get better air flow onto the printed part. Might be worth printing one out and trying it if fan speed and print orientation do not help.

Your first layer looks a little squished -- if you run your finger along the bottom of the Benchy, there shouldn't be a ridge between the first and second layers, it should transition smoothly. The text on the bottom of the boat should be clearly legible, and you should be able to see the perimeters around the lettering.

My pre-assembled MK3 had the same issue, even the PRUSA logo was super squished on the first layer.

Personally, I'm trying to resolve another issue I see in your print, namely the horizontal banding and bad edges. Note the rear of the boat -- that should be a straight vertical line where the corner is... It's pretty rough on my MK3 compared to my CETUS3d. I'm printing a couple benchies each right now, and I'll put up those photos on the forum later.

Update your firmware. I belive part cooling was adjusted in the latest revision.
